Tripod disaster

Not once, but twice in one week, have our tripods been broken.

The pictures are from the first set, when an exetremly drunk woman knocked into the tripods and over they went, shearing the pole completely and bending one of the legs.

The second time, another drunk woman bounced into my stands and it was only the fact that I happened to be facing the same way, that I caught the speaker. If I hadn't of caught it, I'm sure I would have been in hospital still now, as it would have smashed into my head. The stand was trashed again though.

Nice big jbl cabs you got there... heard some of them and they sound nice... and nice and heavy too.

Not much luck your way with the speaker tripods then.

We once sheared one of the t-bar tripiods that hold a goal post up... only put 4 dynamos and 2 abstract twisters on it lol.

You're probably right. I used to use (and still have in fact) Powerdrive stands, but I started using these as they are strong and very light and also hold up to 70Kg!

I don't think it would have mattered in these cases as they were smashed into quite hard and the second woman was on the large side.

Yep, the first time was Lee's booking and the second was mine, both in the same venue and just a couple of days apart. Never happened to me in 20 odd years and then twice in a week!

In this case I don't think the strength was an issue, more stability. If the tripod hadn't been knocked completely over, then the top bit wouldn't have sheared off.

Ahh ok. after looking at the stand it does look a bit on the small side the size of the speakers being use. imo.

Well your opinion is wrong. The stands are rated up to 70Kg and Mackies are 23Kg.

The Mackies are a 12" speaker and aren't that big, let alone heavy.

The pictures were from Lee's stand, which were slightly worse off than mine as he didn't manage to catch his, but I did.

Neither. Thousands of people use these stands and they are fairly standard. The Mackies are not too big to go on them. That's a fact, which is why I'm saying you are wrong.

proel is a well established company and design very well made and sturdy stands! if it says it will hold 70kg then it will they are probably tested to twice this amount for safety issues! but when a given amouny of force is focussed fast on a certain point then it will just sheer off like it has done. its like if you make a bridge to hold 10 stone and you are 8 stone then you stand in the middle and jump it will give way because its like 16 stone being applied if you no what i mean:)rambling on a bit here but you get the point

I managed to get £45 from the first person, but didn't see the second woman as I was holding a speaker up in front of my face.

I have an excess for the insurance, so it's not worth claiming.

Same here.

When the threads finally went on my Doughty steel stands after about 10 years, I thought I'd replace them with aluminium ones, as they were lighter.

However, I hated them...as they seemed a bit bendy compared to the steel ones & just not heavy duty enough.

After a couple of gigs, I threw them out & bought another pair of Doughty jobs. Although they were more expensive, they're as solid as a rock, and there's no way in a million years I can see them breaking or shearing off.

Better to be safe than sorry!

The stand was photographed like that as it wouldn't fold down any more than that after the incident.

None taken, but if had a pair of 23Kg speakers on tripods opened like that, it wouldn't take a drunk woman to knock them over, they'd fall down on their own!
