buying music online

im sure this has been covered before but i couldnt find anything in the search bar so i thought i would post this.

Iv been thinking about the idea of buying single tracks from websites like itunes, napster ect. If i buy a track how do i prove that the track is legal?

Are some website cheaper than others or is it a set price.


If there is a thread already then please link me so i can start reading, otherwise any help would be nice. Just want to buy a few songs without buy 3 or 4 albums just for one track.

I will leave Corabar to give you the full answer--they kindly suggested I tunes which has been pretty good for me--better than HMV---

79 pence a single track.

I believe your email confirmation and billing would probably be proof enough--not sure if the MP3 has any ID?

When you join Napster your account has a library and lists all the tracks you buy in one section. If you need to you can print it off. Unfortunatly, billing is automatic and does not list tracks, just "5 tracks".

I download from various legal sources but mainly Napster. I always re-edit the tags anyway, so I simply include the name of the source in the 'Comments' field. If anyone ever wishes to audit my drive then the tracks will most certainly line up against the catalogues held by the service providers. In fact, I've probably made it easy for them!

iTunes bills automatically (itemised) by email, either save somewhere on your PC or print off. Napster you have to request a billing history, but it is itemised

I had setup up an account with itunes. just orded my first song and about 10 mis later got an email proving that i have bought that song. yay.

But now this song is mp4 format and Traktor 3 cant read this format. Also i cant convert it as its a protected file.

Try burning it to a CD, then ripping it back from the CD as an mp3.

you know what, i was thinking that but i dont really want to write one track to a cd. might get a pack of cd-rw so i can use the disc more times. but the whole idea of me having itunes was to buy tracks that people request a lot. I still prefer to buy the cd as i know i have the cd if you get me.

It's advisable to back up any iTunes purchases to CD anyway, in case your PC crashes

Find the website for a program called TuneBite, which I use. It will take care of any incompatability problems. Search on google for it.
