Well, after years of off-on DJing I've been out of the pubs and on my own (mobile) for about a year (this time around) and love the private scene so much more than th pubs of 'the usual' crowd doing 'the usual' and (as I love to include karaoke in my show) singing 'the usual' songs - often good but, even more often, quite blummin' awfully!!!
I think the best thing I did was get out of pubs - I kept getting drunk! Just kidding - although my marriage was somewhat strained at the time and now my wife can go with me whenever we get chance for a babysitter, plus she's a very helpful roadie and enjoys chatting to the guests, taking requests, helping me with music selections etc., - as well as the odd trip to the bar!
My set-up consists of double CD player of course, karaoke player, couple of amps, mixer, eq, effects, compressor, mics, 4 x 5/600 watt speakers, custom built table and light goal-post (combined to create a fairly compact set-up), a dozen or so lights, fog machine, hazer, bubbles, monitor/screen (for karaoke) and, the centre of it is my laptop, external hard drive, MixMeister Fusion (dor DJing) and Swift Elite 4 (for karaoke), external midi controller, and about seventeen miles of cables etc., .
Oh - and that's my idea of keeping it simple.
Fortunately my wife is very forgiving at losing the dining room to all the Disco and Karaoke gear.
Working from a laptop is very flexible - although it can be a pain if I buy loads of music in one go as it takes time transferring to the hard drive. I also have to backup the hard drive (just in case) - and then there's the added licence for being 'digital'. Odd that isn't it, 200 quid for a 'Digital DJ' licence and yet CD's are Digital media..??? Things that make ya go hmmmmmm!
