Hi all,
Last night was yet another xmas party at my hotel residency and it would be noted as the best so far if it wasn't for one idiot.
I've got into a routine with xmas parties over the past couple of weeks. When they are eating their meals I tend to get out of the way and leave them to it so on goes the xmas compilation so it saves me standing there like a spare part.
I've already previously been around the tables and left request slips and pens on them and as the hotel staff go round serving, they let people know about the request slips so that the guests can get thinking about the tunes they would like to hear. It works really well.
When they are just finishing their desserts, I get on the mic and welcome to the hotel and also something along the lines of "I want you to all enjoy the evening as much as possible so I want you to tell me the songs that YOU want to hear so you all get the music you want"....So far, everything that has come in has been an eclectic mix and it's been great (last night I did a huge Indie set and also played the likes of Nirvana, Green Day and My Chemical Romance too as well as the usual stuff).
Anyway, it got to that time of the evening where you knew that everyone was drunk (about 11pm - I'm booked until 1am)...Everyone was dancing and it was a great atmosphere...well...until my eyes and concentration were diverted to a big asian guy that was standing to the side of the dancefloor. Like I said, everyone was dancing and enjoying themselves and probably unaware of this guy but he was annoying to say the least. He was (on purpose) directly in my line of view and stood there arms folded, shaking his head and mouthing to me "No, No, No...rubbish!"... I tried to ignore him and concentrate on what I was doing and then the next thing I know when I look up, he stood about 6ft away from me doing the same thing again.
I went over to him and asked him what the problem was..."This is :Censored: man" he said..."Play something else!"... I said to him that everyone was dancing and having a good time and what would he like me to play...."Anything but this" he said..."Ok, what would you like?" I asked trying to be as polite as possible..."Play some Jungle or something" he said...well he shouted to be honest. I explained that Jungle probably wouldn't be appropriate but I would see what I had....he then walked off.
I was amazed then to see him go back to the same position he had been in before and continue to do the same thing he had done before, shaking his head and mouthing out that it was rubbish...he even then started waving his arms in my direction and started shouting out as loud as he could "No No No!!" he was also trying to get other people's attention by tapping them on the shoulder and pointing at me and shouting out again...He didn't get much interest. About 10 minutes passed of this and I had enough so when I caught his eye I beckoned him over...He came over, stumbling a bit and I went over to him.."Look, what is the problem here?" I asked... "You aint played my tune yet, this is :Censored:!" he said... "Right, I'm sorry about this but I think you are being very rude" I said..."I'm here to entertain and everyone else is having a good time. I'm playing music that has been requested and that includes yours too so I suggest you go and try and enjoy yourself"...He didn't say anything to that and just stood there..."Is there anything else?" I asked...He was quiet and just stared at me..."Like I said, I think you are being rude and I don't appreciate it so if you don't mind, I'll get back to my job" I said...He then went off.
This continued right until the end of the night and at the end I could hear him having a moan about me to anyone that would listen to him...which wasn't a lot. I had loads of comments from other people who said that they had really enjoyed themselves but it was this one idiot who spoilt what would have been a really enjoyable night for me too. I doubt if anyone else even noticed (apart from the ones that he tried to tell). I felt intimidated, uncomfortable and also my concentration got mucked up because everytime I looked up he was there making gestures etc..
I have been in to the hotel this morning to air my views with the manager and to put the point across that myself and equipment should not be put in that position. There were no members of staff around who I could've had a word with about this idiot and if anything would've happened then I was on my own. It's as if a door person was needed for the guy or someone from the hotel with authority who could have had a quiet word with one of his colleagues or him, himself. I have read advice about such things on here before and for the first time last night...ever...I very nearly got on the mic and said words to the effect of "Ladies and gentlemen, there appears to be a guy here who things it's funny to abuse me. If anyone knows the guy (and I would point him out) then please have a word because if it continues I will be forced to stop the music"....I didn't do it and I would feel bad for the guests if I did that, I'd also feel embarassed but what do you do?
Last one at the hotel on saturday and then it's stuff I might actually enjoy!

Oh dear... I'm not sure what you can do in these situations, but you have to be firm. I don't think you could get away with playing even just one jungle track, even if the dancefloor is empty at the time. If it were me, I'd say that to him, and and explain that no-one will appreciate it - and often I give them the latest 'Now...' CD to look over - as then they feel the ball is still in their court.

TOUGH CALL-
I suppose there is the old trick of saying very loudly over the PA
Im playing this track for -------------as he specially requested it--:D
Usually sorts things out--after that if it bombs out you REPEAT who asked for it.
This is the ONLY drawback with taking requests--if it doesnt fit in with the way things are going.
Your then dealing with people asking for stupid requests no one could possibly dance to.
Its easier if theres say a group of these guys--last year I did an Xmas party and there were a lot of Asian guys and they came up with a Laptop and asked me to play some of their music.
As they were about 50 per cent of the audience you have to do it--turned out really well-which was a bit of a surprise:D

I sympathise which you here, & i am becoming constantly frustrated with stroppy customers who say also that my music is *Expletive Removed*, when the whole dance floor is dancing.
As i try to concentrate on cue-in up the next song or looking for the next cd, i am not only distracted by their presence, but the verbal drunken abuse also.
As i gave some strong words back of my own one night, as sensible reasoning just didnt work, i then got a call from my agent who had subcontracted the disco out to say, that he had a complaint. I then didnt get any business again from him up until about an 9 months gap!
So now if its a disco from my agent i have to bite my tongue & stand there & be talked to like an inbisil, & try to reason with drunken people which you can NEVER do :bang:
This would include last saturday an xmas party at a school for the teachers, where due to it being my agents booking, i just stood there took the abuse & even let this person who didnt like the request i was playing, lean over & fiddle with some buttons on my decks to try & stop the track.......
I have thought SO many times, how can i combat this verbal drunken, non logical request & abuse. But as someone pointed out above i think i will give this a try, (see next paragraph) BUT only if its one of my own bookings.
I WILL stop the music & announce that 'sorry ladies & gentlemen, we seem have a bit of a problem here. I will then continue the conversation in a calm manner with the the abusive person/persons over the mic with the music stopped. I hope this will embarress them & get them to leave me alone, so as i can do my job, & get back to dancing away the midnight hours to a packed dance floor.
What would you recommend here, you must have been in a similar situation like this also...................

and try it this weekend ..... go to asda and when you get to the front of the queue say to the check out girl " this service is :Censored: how :Censored: slow are you love you want to get your :Censored: finger out and work a bit :Censored: quicker and not be so :Censored: slow i'm gonna :Censored: wait for you outside. Where ever alcohol :beer1: is involved, you will always get silly drunken intoxiated people, who loose inhibitions & gain confident to waffle rubbish & also feel at easy to abuse you.
This in a way can & should be expected to a minor extent, from experience we have all gained diplomatic skills to calm the situation & just keep smiling, however when it becomes over powering & a distraction which then may hinder other peoples & your enjoyment, its what you do about it, & how you nip it in the butt ASAP, that counts.
Why should we have to go home after the disco & the next morning, only to be thinking about how that one person ruined my whole night, & that i'm still angry about their actions the next morning. :bang:
If its my own disco & the payment has already been taken, i shall do whatever it takes now to stop this kind of unwanted behavour, as when the customer is having a good time too, they are not really bothered about controlling their guests either.......

1) Stop the music which gets everyone looking your way.
2) Use your mic and system at maximum volume and get attention asking person to be removed. If the venue staff don't help, you often find someone else will.
3) Refuse to continue until person/s have stopped and are out of the building.
4) If all else fails - pack up and go home.
5) Have mobile phone to hand with 999 ready to call.
Never reached No. 4 though I did have No. 5 ready once.

Thanks for your reply, i am pleased to note that you personally have steps in place already, - well done
If DJ's perhaps all stick to the same set of actions, lets hope in the near future we give a strong message to the idiots out there, as to what actions we shall & will impliment.
If the general public then learn of this constant response, that if 'A' happens, the DJ will do B & C, then we might, just might, be appeased in some way, if we all stick together.
Can anyone give examples of where the above steps have helped them in their cause...

Have become so fed up with this said situation over the years I decided to pay for a door superviser coarse, Best thing I ever did
keep the old SIA badge handy clip on the old top and calmly speak to the said person ;)
9 times out of 10 the person has been to night clubs clocks the old badge and thinks twice and backs down (also earn a few quid when the discos are a bit thin on the ground :D )
But at the end of the day christmas partys with mixed tastes are always going to be a problem

Infinity - I don't usually get bother because (apparently), I have 'that look' that tells people not to try it on....I've never understood it myself but hey, if it helps most of the time then cool.
I had a word yesterday with the Duty Manager and he totally agreed with everything that I said. We were actually having a chat in reception when would you believe it, the guy in question waltzed up to the front desk and checked out. He looked like he'd had a big night on the sauce and didn't even acknowledge me but the second I saw him it made my blood boil. The Duty manager said that he would forward my concerns on to the general manager so we'll see what happens next.
Anyway, we must've been chatting for at least 15 minutes after the guy had checked out and as I walked out the doors to get in my van (minus the magnetic signs), I was quite surprised to see him sat in a car parked next to me!! I thought about it for a second and whether it was the right thing or wrong thing to do, I still did the following. I walked around to the side of his car and he was on the phone so I waited for a minute or two and he looked a bit confused....He then wound down his window when he'd finished on the phone and said "Er..hello...can I help you?"...."You don't recognise me do you mate?" I said to him..."Er...should I?" he replied.... "I'm the person you gave a load of :bang: to last night as I was DJing at your christmas party!!" I said..
I won't go on about it guys but to cut it short...he didn't have a clue what he had done or how he had acted and he couldn't apologise enough. I know what some of you may be thinking...."Did he threaten him?" or stuff like that... The answer is NO...I felt like it and I felt like playing on the fact that he couldn't remember anything but I didn't. I told him that he made a potentially enjoyable evening quite unpleasant and that he was lucky that I kept calm as he was in danger of being the cause of a party coming to a premature end....As I said, he apologised quite a lot and I felt a bit better after that seeing as I had another one to do last night which in short, was excellent.
I think the problem with christmas parties at hotels is that some people have never been to a hotel or (supposedly) posh do before and they think that they should be waited on hand and foot so they play on it. We've all seen it before I'm sure...some of the 'ladies' look like mutton dressed as lamb and the language is terrible after a few drinks (that their company is paying for), some of the guys make no effort whatsoever even for one night out and turn up in tatty old jeans and t-shirts (one even had a baseball cap on at one I did last week!), and if we dressed like that then I am sure we would get complaints about our attire. It's funny, I've noticed that if you are a female...it doesn't matter whether you are 18 or 60, the ladies know how to enjoy themselves and want a good dance to a full range of music, mostly party classics. If you are male and under 30, you (they) go to a christmas party with thoughts already in their heads that it's going to be a 'cheesy' DJ who is going to play the likes of 'The Birdie Song' etc so once they have had their meals they will either (a) Go straight to the bar and stay there and are almost determined to not enjoy the night and go with the flow and enjoy it for what it is, or (b) Hassle you all night about the music, requesting some 'slamming' tunes or Hip Hop, RnB etc...Sometimes the classic "I'm a DJ too" line comes up or "My mate's a DJ aswell".... NOT everyone is like it but that's how I see things and it's the same every year.
Even though companies pay a lot of money to host their christmas parties at hotels etc, the people that work for them (well, some of them) are only out for the free food and drink and I think it's disgusting. I hate the fact that they have pre-conceived ideas in their heads that it's going to be rubbish from the start because it is the "Works christmas do", but I suppose that's life and one of the things we have to put up with?

That's it, pretty much, in a (coco)nutshell ;)
The worst Christmas dos, in my experience, are the ones at hotels/venues where tables have been sold to various companies so you have three or four companies all together whose staff won't dance with the staff of the other companies AND you have whatever weird dynamics from within the company, too.
Second to these are the company dos where the company has, by virtue of its business, two or more distinct "types" of staff - couriers and trucking firms are the worst as you have the office/management staff and you have the workshop/driver staff - the former want disco, 60s/70s soul, and classic rock the latter want hip-hop or modern dance (and maybe some hard rock/indie) - the only people that will dance with both crowds are the receptionists and PAs. I've even tried telling everyone part way through the night that as no-one is dancing to anyone else's music that I'm going to play 80s music (as then you get the crossover between disco and modern R'n'B and classic rock that's also, almost modern rock)... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
In both scenarios drunken idiots just make it all the harder.

We get this sort of thing quite often. Currently in the middle of a run of 500 + people Christmas parties, and on Friday there was a guy making gestures and giving me funny looks when we are playing a couple of Bhangra tracks (about 25% asian audience, and probrably 150 on the floor). In this situation, I will usually call them over to the side of the stage and ask them what the problem is. Usually the issue can be resolved peacefully, if not, door staff are at hand.
At the end of the day, when you've got a big audience, you will never please everyone.

Ah yes--your talking "White van man" here!
Although we dont cover mainstream Discos we have arranged quite a few Line Dance Xmas Parties this year and I think it will continue to grow--
The reason is--
People dont want to dance with people they work with --they can dance "on their own" a few feet away without physical contact:rolleyes:

Never experienced threats myself, although have been told on occasion to "put something good on" but that's generally at weddings where I might be playing from the bride or groom's playlist/directions.
However, had a cracking gig last night, followed a comedian and a Robbie Williams impersonator and therefore played from 11.15 til 1.15 with a packed dancefloor right from the very first song (Maria - All I Want, relating to another thread!) towards the end was asked by the MD of the company to finish with New York, New York so thought Queen - Don't Stop Me, right to the end, would provide a nice slow down to start up the cymbals and trumpets.
The crowd were singing their hearts out, even past the end of the Queen track and I gave it a few seconds before starting Frank and then this short, round woman, around 45-50, in a santa dress, came round the back of the console shouting at me, screwing her face up in anger - the rest were already linking arms and kick-stepping - and she continued shouting "how could you do that to Queen!" I asked her what she meant and she said I had faded the song out early. eh??!!??
I just shook my head and then politely suggested she go join the ever increasing circle of people as there would be no room for her.
Got a nice round of applause etc. at the end. She came over again and I thought 'oh no, here we go again' but she reached her arms up grabbed my shoulders and planted a kiss on my cheek then said "I wish you hadn't faded Queen out, I love that song" I just said "ok, next time I won't" and she smiled and left.
No point to this story really, except that people do the most strange things when drunk and, although sometimes difficult, a cheery, appeasing manner seems to work best for me.

Hi all,
Last night was yet another xmas party at my hotel residency and it would be noted as the best so far if it wasn't for one idiot.

Sounds like a crappy position you were put in Gary, the guy sounds like a right prat.
----------------------
If any actions of a guest stops me from performing my job properly, I'll approach the hiring client and let them sort it out. Depending on the severity of the situation I'll power down the equipment till the matters resolved. If the problem continues I'll pack up and go home. This is all covered in my 'terms and conditions'. At the end of the day I'm there to do a job, not to take abuse.

The crowd were singing their hearts out, even past the end of the Queen track and I gave it a few seconds before starting Frank and then this short, round woman, around 45-50, in a santa dress, came round the back of the console shouting at me, screwing her face up in anger - the rest were already linking arms and kick-stepping - and she continued shouting "how could you do that to Queen!" I asked her what she meant and she said I had faded the song out early. eh??!!??
If she was such a fan of the song, she would know the piano and vocals fade out at the end

I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Apparently the version of the song I played (not the same song as in your story, mind), from the greatest hits CD of the artist in question, was not the same as the version playing in her booze-addled brain, so I copped a bit of flack.
I can't even remember the song now, but I do remember having to explain that the song was 2:35 long, and that there was no longer version, except maybe live. That did seem to appease her a bit, oddly.

I know what you mean...I get the same kind of looks when 'Build me up buttercup' fades out really quickly and people look at me as if it's me that's done it.
