i've got a private wedding party in a house to do tomorrow any sugggestions of how to start the night off, (booked 7-12) play background music or not as guests arrive? start off with some up to date pop & take it from there?

Going by the playlist, it looks like they are an older couple. Had a similar playlist myself last Saturday and 80% of the guests turned out to be 50+. For background music when they arrived and during the buffet I played big band - Joe Loss, Geoff Love, Andy Ross, Bryan Smith, Glen Miller with a bit of Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams (Swing When Your Winning). When I tried to start the disco, even Abba cleared the floor so ended up playing ballroom/sequence and slowies all night. Lady in Red always seems to go down well with the older group.

I only had to play for 3.5 hours and found it hard work.

Playlist should work well - but obviously take your other stuff with you(!).

I'm using Christmas stuff as background at the moment - really because I can't stand the bulk of Christmas stuff beyond Mariah Carey.

You seem to have a fair amount of material to work from there, don't go mad they won't expect you to have every genre with you, try sixties and seventies, motown, that might work well.
As for the nerves, thats good it means you want to do well, and I'm sure you will, just try and relax and enjoy it. Good Luck.

Yeah, that's a great playlist to work around. You could try filling around it with some modern cheese like Scissor Sisters and Mika? If that doesn't draw a reaction, just give them more of what they've asked for!
