For all of you that were out this evening (as mine got cancelled in the early hours of yesterday morning :p :eek: ) I hope you had a good night and got no grief.

For me, the nearest I got to Turkey was cooking the kids their 'turkey steaks' and the nearest to Xmas was seeing some football supporters wearing Santa hats on 'Match of the Day' !! :)

Thanks :corabarsteve: for the call. Unfortunately, the :Sleeping: :Sleeping: :Sleeping: got the better of me (after 5 nights out), hope it went well.

Just got back and am unwinding with a glass of wine and a cold sausage; had a very great night as it was nurses and a couple of doctors - all as ###### as newts and really really up for it. Shame the venue had to finish at 11:45 as they would have gone on much longer.

I had a christmas party at a local venue all went well but still room for improvement. Only about 40-60 people but it was a small venue.

The organiser were nice enough to let us have christmas dinner with thier club which was nice of them earlier in the evening but somehow it was missing the turkey:eek: . Just veg and sausage. nice tho and we had dessert:D

Not long back from tonights gig. It was a silver wedding tonight and I'd been looking forward to it for a while. Fantastic night with packed floor from start to finish, I had a great time. Got a nice tip, and a bottle of Jack Daniels given to me from the organisers at the end of the event. Looks like it's going to be a very "merry" christmas. :)

Girls footy party - not interested in dancing as they pull a ball from the Christmas tree and kicked and threw it around for 3.5 hours even before I started playing anything!

Some good requests but only had the requestees dancing.

Having a great December again. Started my run on Friday 28th and every night since then has been a good one. Full floors, rounds of applause, praise to the management and loads of punters immediately re-booking for next year on the proviso that I am doing the disco. This is already my 11th Xmas season at the same venue. 6 to go (finish on Saturday). Touch wood they will all be good too.

We did a party on Fri - with the same results as it was for a local football club. However, only the parents and about 30 kids showed up despite the promise from the organiser that 'the ladies football team would be there and we've invited other ladies teams to make it swing'. Two hours of pass the parcel, statues, kids fancy dress and a ball being kicked around and a winter barbie plus some guy taking 45 minutes to do the raffle. :bang: Then about six people wanting to dance right through the end after everyone else had gone to put the kids to bed. :bang: :bang:

Still, we were joined by 6 foot by 6 foot Spongebob square pants which was amusing.

Right let's see.

It was a Christmas party at one of our hotels. Several medium sized parties from different companies, plus 2 ladies who were obviously hotel guests that had paid for a Christmas dinner & dance as opposed to eating in the carvery, they were seated on 2 spare seats at one of 2 tables used by one of the parties(actually the one that my night's idiot was seated at) (more about the ladies later).

The evening started off very well with a fairly full dancefloor & a good mix of requests.

The first I was aware of the idiot in question was when I noticed him dancing very closely (& I mean very closely) to a succession of ladies that weren't from his group (all male). Each time it happened he was told in no uncertain terms to bugger off, but it was all smiles & they were to the most part fairly good natured about it. By this time the other 2 ladies had gone (possibly fed up with their table mates)

A bit later he climbed up onto one of the tables (one that wasn't anything to do with his group) & started dancing. Now as most of you will know, hotel banqueting tables are only really designed to hold the combined weight of food & drink & not an inebriated adult male. Before long the whole thing went crashing down & (as it was the nearest table to the dancefloor) the dancefloor became covered with broken glass & liquid.

Shortly after this he disappeared & I thought he'd been asked to leave. Then at about midnight, he reappeared & headed for the bar, where what appeared to be quite a heated discussion ensued. Shortly after this I saw him on the dancefloor with a full bottle of wine, up to his old dirty dancing tricks again. I had made announcements about no drinks on the dance floor but they were by this time unheeded, largely on account of the amount of them that had been consumed.


Anyway a little later he was doing something right in front of me & decided to use the front of my rig to steady himself (basically the piece of MDF that fits on hinged to the top shelf of the Ultimax to support the curtain. It's chained to the uprights so it won't go forward, but any pressure in my direction pushes it towards the decks, amp etc).

I asked him not to lean on it & explained why, he ignored me & carried on with whatever he was doing. So I tapped his hand that was on the rig & asked him again. Still no response, so I removed his hand & explained why (at least I had his attention now). His response to this was to put both hands on the curtain support. So I removed both of them & asked him politely not to do it & again told him why (that he was shoving hundreds of pounds of equipment towards the other edge of the stand). He then put both hands back where they had been & really started shoving (whilst pulling an angry face that really could only be described as gurning). A test of strength then ensued between me & him. The end result being that as I managed to get both his hands off the rig, he shifted his centre of gravity which sent both of us sideways & resulted in my left elbow smashing down squarely on the left hand jog wheel. At this point I cut the music very abruptly & announced that if the people that were with this person did not remove him, then the disco would be finishing early, as I would not put up with abuse to myself or my equipment. His group seemed to think that "Come on mate it's Christmas & he's had a drink" would some how placate me. This was not the case & I announced to the other punters that as the rest of his party were unwilling to get him to leave that tonight's function was now over.

It was at this point that he regained his power of speech & said that he & I should go out & sort this. I won't go into more detail about what happened next as this post is already beginning to resemble War & Peace, but suffice to say that the police arrived & he was finally ejected from the building at 00:30.

The police asked me if I wanted to take any action & I said no (stupidly before I had checked my kit).

Anyway I cranked the music back up again (playing the track that got cut short on the same deck it was on previously) when the duty manager told me to turn it all off & finish, as it was company policy to end any event that the police had to attend, even though I told him that it was nothing to do with the remaining guests & that they had been as good as gold the rest of the night, even when on the receiving end of that arse's antics.

The remaining guests then kicked off in reception at the duty manager (but that's another story & doesn't involve me (the police weren't called)).

So I just packed up to go home. It was only after I'd disconnected everything that I noticed all the buttons on the left deck were depressed (& I would've been too If I'd been on the receiving end of my elbow). Anyway it was just a case of flicking the play & cue buttons so that they came out from behind the faceplate (or so I thought) although all the buttons on the left were slightly lower than their counterparts on the right but all seemed OK other than that, but I did point out the damage to the duty manager.

Got to yesterday's gig only to discover that none of the controls on the left deck worked. Luckily the one exception was hot start a1 so I spent the whole gig using hot start as a play button. Got through it OK though.

My new HD2500 should arrive tomorrow morning & then the other one is off for repairs.


On the plus side, once it's fixed , I'll have 2 HD2500s to play with & won't need CD back up. (Although I'd sooner it hadn't happened in the first place)

I'm really sorry to hear about this, and hope that the damage isn't permanent.

It's functions like this that give some Xmas parties a bad name (as can be seen by other posts recently).

Just out of interest, were any of the venue staff in attendance at the time of the incident and/or during the night after the meal ?

We did have one woman who was somewhat unsteady and bumped quite hard into the front, but I saw what was happening and stopped the amp from falling. She was extremely apologetic, but I did keep an eye out for anyone getting too close after that.

On the whole, they were very well behaved, although loud. Luckily not many are as cantankerous as your man.

Whatever happened to the amiable drunks you used to get? Most seem to get aggressive now.

I had a similarly petulant idiot a few years baclk who caused me to stop the music outright (the one and only time I've ever had to), fortunately my equipment was spared.

At the risk of stating the obvious, maybe the bit of MDF in question needs a prop or some kind of fastening to stop it from moving back towards the gear in the way you've described - one falling punter is all it would take.

I found out what the problem was with the speakers BTW, some screws had worked loose & the grils were flapping around making a big farting sound. As for the Leos, one had blown a lamp & the other had somehow become unplugged.

It's not there to protect the kit Alan, it's just there to hide the flightcases. in effect no different to just having a deck skirt & the console open to the front as per other folk's set ups.
