I've just bought a couple of PCs with Vista on and am just in the process of re-installing all my software etc.

At the moment it feels rather sluggish though. Anyone got any tips for optomising or anything else I should know about it?

One has 2Gb and the other (which was a cheapy) has 512Mb. I'm awaiting an email back from Offtek with prices for more ram.

I like this sidebar gadget on Vista though.

Visata on 512MB of ram, ouch! I can't understand why manufacturers release vista laptops with such a small amount of memory in.

All four of us in the IT Dept I work in had new laptops with Vista and we have a now reverted back to XP. You will probably find things like file copying takes longer than in XP. You like the sidebar, look in task manager at it's memory usage (depends on how many gadgets you have running on the sidebar).

I tried to like vista for 3 months and hated it, yes Vista is supposed to be more secure, but there there are not really any features that make it worth upgrading to.

Take a look at link below, do you have this installed

Yes most companies will wait until the first service pack of a product before rolling out accross the whole compnay. But we being IT people wanted to see what all the fuss was about so got vista for ourselves only.

To be honest, Microsoft have got a lot of work to do to make Vista a viable business product.

i was watching the gadget show a while back and the old man installed the vista disc. there is a thing on the vista site that tells your pc what vista's it can handle.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

vista is technicially a copy of the mac os 10.

XP takes less memory and works just as good or better then vista so your better off with XP.

The ram is running at about 40% with 3 gadgets running in the sidebar.

They are PCs, not laptops.

I already have Vista installed. I didn't want to turn this into a debate about which is better either.

I asked for any useful tips or suggestions.

Why is it, when a new O/S comes out, everyone feels the need to slate it?

I bought memory that I've heard of, from a company I use regularly, to go in the 2 specific machines.

What you have linked to doesn't fit either of my machines.

Probably because M$ continually extract the urine with their 'new' operating systems, which quite frankly I find lacking for all the funds, resources and time they have to improve them. They force everyone to upgrade to them sooner or later, but I do think we should be getting more. Look at the progress made from MSDOS to Windows, then Windows 95 - that was something worth paying for. The incremental releases since then have been poor.

i just bought a new laptop with 2 gig memory duel core and amd 64 but its on vista.

I use pcdj as well as pcdj-kj and i have to run this in compatability mode for it to work. I will be formatting and installing xp as soon as i can reason for this is because i used the new laptop once and halfway through a song pcdj crashed i had to switch to cd as fast as i could. Now i never had this problem with my old laptop running xp.

vista sucks as far as i am concerned. get rid

Because of one problem?

Vista is not supported by PCDJ as far as I'm aware, so why would you buy a Vista laptop anyway?

Now, I don't want to know all your problems with Vista, so please stop telling me.

Has anyone got any useful tips or suggestions please?

Disable the Sidebar - ta-da! 20% improvement in speed.

If you trust your browsing habits, disable the Phishing Filter in IE. Ta-da! Web pages load twice as quick.

If you can live without the "Instant Search" (gotta get trading standards onto that one  ) stop the Search service - ta-da! Everything runs quicker.

Failing that, here's (http://www.cucirca.com/2007/05/03/how-to-speed-up-vista/) a useful set of tips.

Although I don't let Vista near DJ computers, I use it around the office and at home and for general purpose use it's great. Media Center is 50x better than the old one, too.

Thanks for the tips Martin.

I had the phishing filter off in XP and forgot how slow it made everything.

No worries.

The other one to watch for is the Wireless Zero Configuration Service (zcfgsvc). If you have a wireless card fitted, but you only ever use the computer wired, disable the service. It's a resource hog and unnecessary unless you regularly roam wireless networks.

I have 2 wireless networks at the moment as I'm trying out Sky BB, but once I suss out which one I'm going to use I'll definately disable it on this PC as it is wired via ethernet.

As much ram (Kingston or otherwise) as you can humanly stuff in there as Vista is pretty unbearable with less than 2GB. Also as previously mentioned Vista has lots of "helpful" features and options automatically enabled when you load it on. Best bet is to look at what its loading in to the tray at startup. Also the wireless agent is dreadful and a resource hog, so disable if not using. Pishing already mentioned...just disable anything you're not using and that should help considerably.

The reason so many people slag off a new MS OS when it comes out is, they're usually fairly problematic (XP aside as it was essentially NT4 for the most part). Vista has some back compatability issues with many popular software titles, and really needs a new Dual Core processor and plenty of RAM to make it bearable or even useable...meaning a lot of people will have to buy a new PC if they want to use vista without crying every time it takes 15 minutes to start up.

Well that last statement's a bit OTT...

Just because application developers haven't yet released updated product versions designed to work with Vista does not mean that Vista isn't a bona-fide product.

I'm not sure that a rather large company like Microsoft would unleash a 'not properly developed' product onto the public.

I disagree - Vista could easily have had a XP compatible mode, or even full support - even if it sacrifices resources.

I have Vista insalled on an Acer laptop and it has a power option where i can set the CPU useage for the battery when plugged in etc. When it is plugged in the CPU has 100% and other settings all add to the power the CPU can use for programs.

Also a dual core helps!!

If it is slow on start up then look at what start programs operate.

Hope that helps, if you can understand it!

All this Vista bashing is great and honorouble (and spot-on - Vista is in a corporate wasteland at the moment and I can't remember any of MS previous operating systems creating such a howl and backlash form corporate IT professionals. Blimey, even Dell had to force MS to give XP a longer life as they couldn't sell systems to corporates with Vista on), however Daz really wanted ways to speed up Vista where possible (Daz, did you say it was Vista Home Basic or Premium).

Mmmm, XP based on NT4?..... well I guess, sort of if you are referring to the use of the HAL and some of the networking components but Windows 2000 was a reasonably sized step inbetween NT4 and XP. That's a little like saying Windows 98 was based on DOS 3.1

This is quite amusing, a lot of you are saying things like "i tried vista for 10 minutes and couldn't deal with it" - well no wonder, you cannot even consider sharing your opinion if you've only used it for 10 minutes - 10 days maybe, but I would have thought at least a month before you could really give a truthful report.

The other thing everyone seems to have against it, is the gadgets and gizmos - so, you don't have to use them! I have been using Vista since it came out to volume license users in September 2006. I have to say, I gave it a chance and actually if you know what you're doing in XP, you can do everything you did before in Vista (with the odd exception where you need to employ your Google skills).

If Vista is running slow for you, consider how much you need all of your software for a start. Getting a new PC, or re-installing windows etc, is always a great way to have a "clean start" - don't install any software (except maybe Office) until you need it, that way, you only install software you actually use. I am happily running Vista on 1.5GB of Ram, and infact my laptop only has a 1gb of ram and runs vista enterprise with no problems.

Some of you have also said X software/hardware doesn't work. This is not the fault of MS, this is the software/hardware manufacture's fault. MS don't make their Operating systems to match other software/hardware. The software/hardware manufactures have to design their software/hardware/firmware around the biggest operating systems out there at the time of release. No doubt within time Denon and the rest of them, will release firmware or driver updates which will work with Vista, however - it's not MS's fault!

Don't knock it, until you have tried it....and given it a proper test!

I didn't ask for opinions on Vista. I was asking for tips or tricks.

These are 2 new PCs, so I won''t be goin back to XP on them.

What is so bad about IE? Nothing. It loads up web pages and has tabbed browsing and good security. What else would you want or need?

I've tried Opera, Firefox and numerous others and there is not a great deal of difference.

XP comes with IE as did Windows 98 and 95. 2000 I didn't use, so can't comment.

:agree: I have never understood why people bash Internet Explorer
Furthermore, when you ask IE bashers for their reasoning, they go blank on you, or simply tell you it's "cooler" to use Mozilla, Linux or Fire Fox (innit  )

A bit like it's uncool to own a mobile phone more than 6 months old, innit. Even though it may work perfectly well....

No, it can't take pictures (if I want to take pictures, I'll use a camera thanks)...

No, it can't go online (if I want to go online, I'll use my desktop or laptop, thanks)...
