View Full Version : Where do you get your work from?

In the past I've got all of my work through word of mouth and the website, but as I have built up my gear I am now looking at more specific types of weddings.

I have registered with what I think are the usual wedding websites and trialled adwords from Google but would be interested to hear which other sites/advertising/methods of gaining work everyone else uses and how they compare in terms of cost per booking???

for what its worth most of my enquiries come directly from the websites with a few from uk disco.

are there any stats on the no. of queries through this site yet admins??

thanks

Mine comes from the Yellow Pages (how much mate? I can get one for £100, etc...), Website, Word of Mouth, Residency referrals where I do a good rate, Repeat bookings and other enquiries, etc.... (People asking me if I know anyone who does discos, etc.....!)

My advertising consists of the usual directorys, get a few from UK disco and starting to get word of mouth now that i've been over from Belfast for about six months now.

Have got an ad on the CD Rom as the featured Wedding disco for the North of England in the December edition of Brides magazine and still waiting for anything from that!

75% of my work comes through my website, which I advertise on 35 online directories, mostly wedding listing sites, half of which are free listings and the rest being paid for (anything up to about £110 a year).

The other 25% of my work comes from a couple of friends who run agencies, repeat bookings, recommendations & people who have picked up cards at previous gigs.

I've never mailed or visited local venues to offer my services, as I've never found it to be necessary.

You should be able to see in your own webstats where your hits have come from. Although, its more difficult to tell which of these turn into enquiries, but I try to remember to ask and my web contact form has a drop down box to select how they found us.

I'd say I get about 60% of my work through my website, and of these, most come from google and search engines, then UK Disco, and then here. The rest of my work is from word of mouth, regular venues and through other DJs.

It might sound stupid, although if you even here the code word "disco" mentioned by some one, I tend to start talking to them, and end up with work. Otherwise people who've been at a gig, business cards, etc.

Or if you fancy being alternative (generalising here) and don't bother with a star cloth swapping it for a fancy banner with your name, logo and contact details, would help.

Hitched hasnt worked for my specialist Wedding Show--tried two one month freebies at different times--no enquiries:eek:

I think people on here have had work through Hitched?

We get loads of enquires through Google, its our best source of enquires.

Getting a high placing on Google or Yahoo is important.

YP has attracted mainly the "how much" tyre kickers but we sometimes get the odd reasonable booking---( not that often )

It also seems to attract people who dont use the Internet much--which is not helpful if your trying to operate using e mail Contracts and send people video links etc.

Im in YP again this year--thought it would give me a good laugh when the punters ring up:D :D :D

interesting to hear that- i tried that and had no enquiries too.

i'm getting to the stage where i would be happy to spend a couple of hundred on one piece of advertising if i knew i would get a decent return for it, but i agree about google- i think that is the key and i have been working hard recently to move up the rankings.

good old fashioned bribery works too- i agreed to give a local venue £50 for each booking i get from them...

Presumably you put £50 on top of your normal rates---otherwise you could be getting better paid work direct---unless your getting a lot of work from the venue of course that wouldnt otherwise be available.

I havent bothered but have you thought about sponsored links--like this

See how many forum members you can spot:D

I'm surprised by the previous negative comments about Hitched.

Although my premium advert costs £111 a year, it puts me very near the top of the listings...and is my second most successful site out of the 35 I advertise on.

26 page hits to my website so far this month.

I get the impression that Hitched is one of the biggest and best wedding sites.

not negative- just saying that it didnt generate any enquiries when i tried it - and ultimately bookings per pound is what i am concerned with- not where i appear in ranknigs.

i know theres plenty of sites out there and am just keen to know if anyone has any gems of wisdom as to which generate the most work, but at the same time i know what works for you might not work for me.

Rob

How can you say that these sites are successful when you don't actually know where you are taking the bookings from?

You might not have taken one single booking from those 26 hits?

Darren,

Sorry if I didn't word it very well, but I meant successful in terms of getting the most hits to my website from people looking for a mobile disco.

It's not possible to ascertain which of the sites I advertise on get me the most actual bookings, but the next best thing...which I CAN get accurate figures for...is to see how many website hits are produced by each of the sites I advertise on.

Common sense would suggest there would be some sort of link between firstly the number of people who see my advert and click on the link to my site and secondly the number of people who book me.

Therefore, if I advertise on a site which brings 300 hits to my website in a year, I'd expect that advert to bring in more bookings than a site which only brings 3 hits to my website.

In other words, the more people who go into a shop & look around, the more people who will buy something.

The way to really make your advertising stretch further on the wedding sites is to be an active participant in the forums, too. ;)
