Valuing used equipment?

Hi buying loads of stuff like decks, f.cases, lights, tables, speakers, stands. basically you name it he has it :)

I want to buy the lot as although i have enough gear i can sell on stuff i dont want.

Does anyone know (apart from ebay etc.) any good sites or other resources to value used DJ equipment.

Obviously i want the least price possible :D

surely you mean the best deal possible?? :D :D :D remember you get what you pay for.

DJ bids right here has some good deals , also I was told look at about 1/3 retail value for second hand .

but be very very careful what condition you buy second hand gear in.

Ta, i want to find other products online at the cheapest price to print off and show the bloke. I will then ad it up and knock off a sum for the bulk purchase.

He wants it out of his garage and needs the money so he will agree to a good deal. other wise he has to sell them separately.

Most of the blokes gear is in great condition and not over used. he is throwing in all the misc stuff like leads, cheaper lights, boxes etc. for free too!

IMHO, second-hand valuation is personal to your own circumstances and depends on two key drivers:

Firstly:
(1) How much can YOU buy new for, in relation to RRP?
(2) Are you VAT registered?

For example, my company, and I know Jamie & Darren's likewise, can buy branded gear at trade less settlement AND can claim the VAT back, which can be up to 55% off the "retail including VAT price". This often makes the proposition of risking second hand gear very unattractive.

However, if you can only buy at retail or just under, and cannot reclaim VAT, buying secondhand at around a third of retail can be quite an attractive proposition.

Secondly, brand is key. Industry standard brands hold their value, even after a number of years. For example, prior to being discontinued last year, Crown VZ5Ks retailed around £2,200 ex vat, however £1,000 is still the benchmark price for a slab in decent condition, often 5 or more years old and this probably won't be too far short of £800-£900 even in another couple of years.

5-6 year old ex rental C6s often go for around 60% of their original cost, and still represent good value, however an unbranded or nasty PROC import box would be lucky to fetch 6% of it's original cost after that length of time, unless you're selling during the first week in November.:D

Thanks i'm currently going through retail sites and getting the best price. i will knock off a percentage on the condition and brand of the product. i'm not vat registered yet, so does not apply to me.

Shall i hold on to the stuff i want to sell till about late september then? i assume people want things for xmas and new year?

All of it is in great condition and not very well used. all pretty much known brands too!

All the secondhand shops around the city here buy in for 1/4 new retail and sell for half new retail, in general. So no more than 1/3 new retail price - and the 'Bay is of course a good place to find new and s/h prices.

Selling stuff is good around now, when everyone gets their Xmas money from venues /agencies etc and upgrades / buys new stuff in the quiet season.
