How long is a piece of string?

I have a similar question, or rather a question with a similar number of possible answers...

What would most people consider to be sufficient personal income to justify DJing full-time? In other words, if you live alone or only need to make up your share of a joint household income, how much is enough (whether weekly or annually), to flick the day job and consider DJing full-time?

It would depend on family, mortgage, other debts, lifestyle etc etc.

I'm not sure anyone could possibly answer that and if they did, it would be individual annd personal to them and no good to anyone else.

OK, let's put it another way - after everything else is paid comfortably, I would like to have a few £100 left each month to spend on whatever I liked. You could say one-two disco fees a month directly into 'loose change'

OK well as a starter for 10.

We're a family of three - me, Mrs VV and 16-year-old son. Plus two cats, a tank full of fish and 3 chickens. Our fixed outgoings (mortgage, food, utilities, cars, travel etc.) total around £2,500 per month. So pre-tax you're probably looking at £3,200 per month. We don't have a lavish lifestyle, don't go out that often due to the jobs we do and when we do it's more likely to be a nice meal or a trip to the flicks than a blow-out. But then we're not potless either. Mr & Mrs Average I guess.

I suspect you're eyeing up your forthcoming move and working out how on earth you're going to afford it! :D

Well, yes and no, Martin - the wife has that reasonably lucrative contract I mentioned previously, and our mortgage (in NZ but to buy a UK property) will be paid by the rents from our NZ properties.

Hence why, Darren, even vague indications from people was going to be better than absolutely no clue whatever.

No mortgage, one vehicle (to begin with), two adults, two kids.

Well at last look the mortgage is approx £1k of that £2.5k. So anything over £1.5k and you're probably sorted!

For me I would have to clear a minimum after Tax, expences etc. of about £2000 a month, and that's with my wife working full time, I love my day job so will keep the DJing as a pleasurable hobby! :D

Incorrect. It was 4.5 inches long in 1961.

Since then, we've gone metric and the piece of string has frayed and become shorter.

It is now only 7 cms long.

The moral: measure your pieces of string regularly to ensure you stay in touch with reality.:rolleyes:

The only way to answer this is to say that in order to justify DJing full time, you need to be earning enough to pay all your bills & expenses, and have enough left over to be able to live the lifestyle you want.

This amount will vary massively depending on the person, their personal situation, expenses & lifestyle.

Personally, I also like to build in a nice "cushion" in case I lost one or two of my pub quiz nights & couldn't replace them, or if my disco bookings slowed down.

I'm also lucky that my expenses are very low, so I actually earn the amount I need to live on four times over. This gives me peace of mind, as there is no need to panic if things slow down.
