Silent Disco

A silent disco is when the guests listen in through headphones rather than have a PA blaring out. Advantages are obvious but then so are the drawbacks. However for the purposes I'm thinking it'll be a big selling point.

Not intended for parties full of drunkards - and a provision for losses/breakages would be built into the plan.

its been around for a while but more in "club" form- there was a big one at the festival hall not long ago- quite interesting- you can take it to the next level and have different channels on the headphones.

how it would work in mobile form is anyones guess- it is an interesting concept though....

Mentioned it to my trendy 23 yr old son and his response was that he'd heard of these but in the context of people taking their own MP3 players and dancing to these - in other words the dreaded i Pod is already hitting our potential market before its been established!!!

However the concept has some interesting features - if you play different music on different channels it'll be ideal for the mixed age party such as a wedding, youngsters listening to hard core dance music dancing with the grandparents bopping to glen miller. One lot can turn their phones up to max volume and the others have it at a more 'acceptable' level. No more complaints of that's too old; that's too loud etc. Hard work keeping three channels going though, and imagine the noise you'll have to put up with when the punters get drunk and start to sing along and you don't even have the sound system to drown it out......

Another disadvantage - sometimes its hard enough to get punters up and going even when the room is filled with music, if they were in the mood for chatting they would just take their phones off and forget about the music.

I'm not too convinced it will catch on quickly apart from with younger crowds where they are coming in particularly just to dance - for many mobiles we have to work against the raffle, buffet, meal, distant bar etc to get them up and moving and this would not help. However, it is just possible that the gimmick factor may work in its favour.

It'll be interesting to know how it goes.

I think what your son was talking about was flash disco where people turn up at pre determined places.

vv's idea about silent disco is a different type of thing altogether i think.

When I was a lad ( yes I know all the jibes! :D ) Tomorrow's World had a piece on doing discos by interference or something, ie you could have zones of music in one room, playing different music, at different volumes, and completely discrete. Needles to say, I've never heard of it since!;) :D :D

'T in the Park' had a silent disco tent at last years festival. I remember seeing it on the TV and thinking how mad it looked. the reporter was standing on the edge of the dance-floor reporting in a quiet voice, while a hundred ravers we're going 'silently' wild with headphones on. It was a sight to see. :d :d

yeah it's an interesting idea and the cost of wireless headphones is pretty good these days...

They did a silent disco in the east tent at Glastonbury last year which meant people could party till 6am not sure who provided the kit for it though.

personaly i dont think it will work who wants to go to a disco and wear headphones. also i think it would kill the atmos but thats just what i think.

they hold one regularly already so several hundred people seem to want to go at the moment.
