Paul, the VR8s are now discontinued (and I believe replaced by VRXs) I have PAT tested quite a few VR8s over the years and they are nice, well built heads, as is the case with most of the Abstract range.

Depending on whether these second hand lights you are looking at are ex-install or have spent their life on the road, if the latter and uncased check for damage to the stepper mechanisms behind the mirrors, as the design of these heads leaves their top sections fairly exposed, and they don't last being chucked in and out of vehicles without being cased. Broken mirrors are often a tell tale sign, whilst a new mirror is only a couple of quid, it gives you an indication to the treatment the light has endured.

VR8's are good if they are well looked after, they are very high maintenance, a local venue near me has some in and most them dont work, very good pieces of kit when they are working.

The problem with the abstract VR8 is the design of it, it has restricted air flow so this causes them to get too hot and over heat and blow lamps all the time.
