DMX Controllers

I have been reading the terelec catalogue (wholesome bed time reading for any sound/lighting techy:D ), and it made me think.

I say the Sweetlight dmx controllers. Which are a dmx computer connection, with optional controller. But this lot with the controller is over £600.

You can get the simple USB to DMX connector anf download the software, but if the laptop goes down, you a in trouble.

SO it got me thinking, does anyone know of any lighting desks that can be programmed on a computer (having the ease of use and good controll) but then being a stand alone controller when live, to have the reliability.

I have a laptop available to do it, but i would not trust it to be reliable enough, they have gone down on me in the past enough times, and if that happened with the entire lighing rig, it could be a bit tricky (its easy enough to fade onto a deck with the sound laptop).

No it isn't ... isn't it a USB dongle and that's it.

What he is asking is whether you can programme a controller using the pc... and then use it as a stand alone controller.

I think the answer in short is yes......
But I don't know what you can get which is simple enough for a disco.


My advice would be to go for something like DASLIGHT which is a PC based software (just run a dedicated laptop) and then have a controller (like the ACME DMX mASTER) on stanby should it fail... which is unlikely.

You can also have the acme dmx master inputing to the software.

yeah, abox that dont work. i had an eletrician make it up for me and it hasnt worked at all. nor worth it at all but some people say it has worked and works well but i dont see it.

............ had no problem with mine, I built it about 2 years ago, took me about an hour. I use it with a dedicated laptop running freestyler (which is free to download, just donate a fiver or summit!)......great bit of kit.

At first I just ran the program on the same PC as my PCDJ with no stability issues at all. £60 for the box and I was up & running! :)

Yeh one of my friends who also techies at the theatre had one.. and had no problems.
