4yr B'day Party

I'm no stranger to doing childrens disco's as i'm often doing them for 8-13yr olds but i've just had a booking for a 4yr old B'day party. Can i just do my normal for childrens disco's or is there anything else i should do? any help or suggestions would be very helpfull.

Have a few "young" games to offer ( Do a search, there's plenty there)

Speak to the client for age ranges, gender etc and what they want.

Action songs will work (you do them with them), Superman, Fast Food Rockers, Big Fish Little Fish and the Finger Song

Musical chairs can be violent, especially with pushing & shoving (I don't play that at any kids parties)

As I say, loads of fun and dittoing what Mayhem said get down to eye level with them, be as silly as you like, and loads of interaction.

OK so my 4th B'day party is this friday and this is what i have planned so far. See what you think and give me any of your ideas.

I was going to start with sitting them all on the floor in a circle and playing chinese whispers and maybe try a mexian wave type of thing and then possiably a pass the parcel style game (if i can think of something to put inside).

Then a game called keys.
where the B'day girl/boy sits in the centre of the circle (and blind folded) and a set of keys are placed infront of them and one by one the other children tries to take the keys witout the B'day girl/boy hearing (if they do hear them take the keys they have to point in the direction they think the "thief" is in) the winner gets a prize.

Then blind folds.
Where i blind fold two people at a time and place a prize on a chair at the end of the hall and the other children has to guide the blind-foldies to the prize. First one to get to the prize wins the prize.

Then a game of tounge twisters followed by a game of Arghhh!!!

Then it will hopefully be time for them to have some food and a drink (while i play abit of pop music in the background).

Then for a game of simon followed by musical statues then corners. A quick song then limbo and "who can skip the most using a skipping rope while whereing flip flops". a quick game of who can stand on one leg the longest

Then a dance comp and for the final 10mins action songs.

I'm hoping that should then be all i have time for and they all go hope.

So what do you think?

hi, was asked to give feedback on this plan !! Been doin kids parties for over 5 yrs and a mum of 5 so i know what kids like (mine always coimn home from one sayin it was rubbish !!)
personally i think 4 yr olds will not want to sit down at the start of a party they will be too excited and want to run around. don't think they would get chinese whispers either my son is 4 and he wouldn't do it lol ! for that age, i usually start with musical bumps but i'm not very strict at getting the kids `out` as they want to carry on, so i usually just get a couple out, give them a sweet, but they are allowed to carry on joining in. i just play it til the end of the song. then its 4 corners or playin with balloons `keepy uppy` something like that where they can still run about and go mad. also i use bubbles and they have to try and catch them, but be careful of gettin it on the floor, short bursts are fine as the kids pop them before they hit floor. then its food etc (4 yr olds take ages to eat and drink) then i would do a sitting down game so no pukies after the food ;-) usually pass the parcel, i put dares in mine such as scream as loud as you can etc. the skipping may be ok but its usually better for older ones and mostly girls, the little ones who weren't skipping would get bored waiting. then its stuff like hokey cokey, happy and you know it, and little teapot, don;t forget this age is at nursery so know a lot of these songs from there. finish with something like sleeping lions, same as dead fishes but more PC, then if any time left just a bit of dance music so they can have a `real` disco til parents come. try and not fit too much in or try and be rigid as kids this age tend to do their own thing anyway and some won't want to join in just run round the whole time. just be silly and make them laugh, and try and enjoy it, its great fun !!!

After all the help i have recieved from various members of this fourm i have decided to re-write my activity plan for my 4th B'day party this friday.
After some time reworking my plan so to be more inviting for younger children i know include my new activity plan as follows:

I havent worked with 4 yr olds that I can remember so im not an expert--but ive worked with plenty of adults and young children.

The only thing that sounds slightly difficult to me would be Limbo.

Have you or anyone you know used this successfully with kids of this age?

Maybe it was mentioned earlier on?

If so great carry on--just doesnt sound to me suitable for very young children. I would use Booker T-- Soul Limbo--fantastic beat -- but maybe thats too old--

Im very pleased to hear the Hokey Cokey being mentioned--just surprised kids of this age would know it--

As Daz says--good planning--dont leave home without a copy of the script though:D :D :D

Well my childrens party is tonight and i can say honestly that i'm looking forwards to it tonight.

Wrapped up my pass the parcle presents up last night but decided against putting dares in each layer as i think they may be a tad young and this would only slow us down.

Just noticed this:

Well the disco was manic to say the least:). I had about 20-30 children turn up all between the ages of 2 and 4 (which was a tad young for my liking) but with my handy activity list to hand I believe I made the best out of the situation. By the time I got stuck into my list the time started flying by and all went well. Had 3 pass the parcels in the end (2 from me and the mother decided to do one.)

As I said before the event I didn't have time to do everything that I had planned and ended up scrapping corners, limbo and follow my leader (which I now think may have been abit complex for them anyway).

On the way to the venue I was thinking about what I had read on this forum and created my own game which I call "SCREEEEAAAAAAMMMM!!!!!!!":D
Basically I got all the children on the dance floor and told them they were all being too quiet so I said after 3 they had to shout as loud as they can
*insert a lot of shouting and screaming here*
Then I stopped them high way through there screams and said is that really as loud as you can scream. Your still to quiet. So I said I’m going to give you one more chance to scream your loudest 1...2...3...
*inset louder scream and shouting here*
Then finally I said I want you to give me your longest, loudest scream using only 1 single breath and who ever can last the longest gets a prize.
*insert long scream here*

Of course some children cheated but I gave out some sweets but the children loved it. They really enjoyed screaming till their blue in the face which was great to see.

It seemed like all the children enjoyed themselves but got very little response from the adults as they just sat at the back near the bar for the whole gig so didn't get the best feeling that I could have at the end:(.
But just before leaving the organiser who runs the venue said they have had a few enquires about holding parties for their children so maybe... just maybe i could get some more childrens party bookings. I guess time will tell.

Just to clarify, i was not in the wrong here.
I said we played the game in cubs, but i did not say anything about the age group mentioned, and the game is also suitable for 4 year olds all the way to 10 year olds.

Had a phone call today from someone who also wanted a party for their 4yr olds birthday who seen me last friday. This is really good news as this means they must have enjoyed themself at the party. It's made my day:D.

I've just found this thread as i don't normally hang around in the Childrens Entertainer Forum, but as I promised my (soon to be) 5 year old step-grand-daughter a disco, I've just found out she's invited about 10-12 of her friends.:eek:

So I think I'll be taking a leaf out of spud's book - I think I'll definately plan it and hopefully will be fun - I also am quite looking forward to it.:D

It's also at my house, not sure if this is a good or bad thing. I don't think I'll be seeing the cats for a while :D

Pleased you have revived this thread JayDeeDrinker:thumbs_up: . I have just taken a booking for a local Nursery for July,although I have done a lot of childrens parties over the years none have been nursery age (usually 10-16yrs).I will be taking a leaf out of spudcooper's book on his activity list for the night to try and keep the little ones happy. Lucky enough organisers are providing prizes and personel to help with games etc.Any one have a Cd compilation with songs mentioned in this thread i.e nursery type songs that covers most popular?

If you are doing a Nursery party or an event for under 5's you will have fun however please remember this mate.

When you are talking to the children make sure that you kneel down so that you are eye to eye with them if you do you will be ok and they will be more responsive to you.

Song wise ask the Nursery staff/Parents what they sing/dance to during their normal Nursery sessions, but here is a few I use:-

Wind the bobbin up
Heads - Shoulders - Knees & Toes
If your happy and you know it
Okey Cokey
Conga

If your party calls for you to be groveling around on the floor then get in there with them mate.

But most of all the biggest bit of advice I can offer you is "SMILE"

I should just say after making the list it made life alot easier even though the party didn't go quite to plan its good that you know whats going on and what your going to be doing next so you can link between one game and to the next.

I found that in the end i was just running out of time i just chose the best games on my list. and it worked really well.

It must have gone well as someone at one of my kids party's have been recommending me and i had a nice little phone call from the pub company brewers faryre last night. want me to do a children's party for them every month which I'm looking forwards to confirming today hopefully.

Mayhem think i'm going to need those details about how to get all the rik'n'nic songs if possible.

Well done, Spud! You should enjoy the work for Brewers Fayre. I sub-contracted to a local guy who had a contract with Brewsters and I did a fair bit of work for a local Brewsters Family Fun pub. They have a fairly huge play area where the kids could play when they're not in the party room with me. I found that the kids (all up to the age of 12) were pretty well behaved and just liked to enjoy themselves (although it's harder to get boys up to dance than girls!). Last year, the guy packed in so the contract went to another company and that was end of that!

HaiFai - I have a great kids CD triple-set that has nursery rhymes, party songs and dancey stuff. Can't remember what it's called but I'll dig it out today and post the title of it. Didn't cost me much and I've used at every christening and wedding I've done this year where I've been entertaining young kids. Until then, there's another one called "My First Nursery Rhymes" which is also pretty good. It's a CD full of nursery rhymes and you get a DVD with it too. My little 'uns love it!

Also, you could try getting the Official CBeeBees Album. This has loads of stuff on the younger kids love.

Apologies for the delay in posting this but, as promised, the CD set I use the most is called SimplyKids. It actually has 4cds to it and not the 3 I mentioned (I forgot about the 'bedtime' disc as it's one I never use). I've also scanned the tracklist on the cd inlay so you can see for yourself the songs on it.

Action songs will work (you do them with them), Superman, Fast Food Rockers, Big Fish Little Fish and the Finger Song

Musical chairs can be violent, especially with pushing & shoving (I don't play that at any kids parties)

As I say, loads of fun and dittoing what Mayhem said get down to eye level with them, be as silly as you like, and loads of interaction.

THe finger song is a great track to play if you can get hold of it, I can't find it on the net. If anyone know what CD it's on that would be great.

I done the same thing a few months ago. They sell a "Party dances" CD in the club shop and behind the bar in the evenings.

Ive done a 3 to 4 year olds party and was dreading it. Played a load of CBeebies themes, also did the music man and superman but I had to do the action, they soon caught on. Musical statues went down a storm to. Got another booking from a Mother their who said her kids loved it.
Oh also got the rope lights rigged up which they loved. Aimed the spot lights on the walls to add a bit of decoration. The Parents usually stick around at these gigs and help out. Did the Hokey Cokey at the end with all the parents. Went down really well. Finally make sure there are no winners or losers with any of the games you do, Saves the tears and tantrums.

I'm not sure who the seller is on there, but they seem genuine (and the CD's are originals) and when I asked about other material they pointed me at the official websites and the fan club site. Rik and Nik's material is also available through iTunes...

By the way, Bob the Builder (aka Neil Morrisey) has done a version of Big Fish and another whole bunch of rip offs of common songs just before Xmas so you might get asked for that (it's better known than the Rik & Nik version) if you hang around at enough kids parties. The album is "Never mind the Breezeblocks" and it's packed with cheesy versions (check the website for the actions for Big Fish - http://www.nevermindthebreezeblocks.com/).

I'm pretty new to doing this, but I seem to get alot of calls from parents who think they're going to get a DJ/Kids entertainer plus all the kit for £60-80. I've talked to a few other DJ's in Bristol and most say they'll do 2hrs for something like £120 - £150 (depending on location and what the parents are expecting from them) - is this roughly what you charge?

First of all I actually quite like the new Bob the builder album:sofa:

The disco in question was a few months ago now but from memory I believe it was just south of Bristol (which is local to me) but have found many good and interesting venues in and around Bristol.

The pricing question is a big :confused: especially for children's party's for a lot of DJ's (not just us locals). I know I don't charge as much as I could or should but I do it for a price I'm happy with. I don't know about yourself DJ Jules but I only DJ Part time / as a hobby so for me its not about making money and getting rich its about enjoying the art of DJing.

My normal prices for a standard children's party is around £80-£100. But these prices are for a maximum of 2Hrs. I charge for for travel when needed.

Can I just say its good to finally see another Bristol lad on here. (Something to keep in mind there aren't that many DJ in our area that will actually do children's party's;) )

Thanks! That's a big help - I'm doing this for the fun/art as well so the price is less of a factor for me, but I'm concious that I don't want to undercut people who rely on this for their livlihood (and of course do myself out of money at the same time!) or for that matter, guys like you - but at the same time don't want to price myself out of the market!

I have noticed that there are alot of DJ's who avoid kids parties like the plague (which I can understand in a way as they do take constant effort for the whole length of the party to keep the kids engaged, potentially for less cash then you'd get for an adult party), but then there's also quite a few professional entertainers as well who sort of cross over into the DJ field as well (my daughter went to a party this afternoon for instance where the parents had hired Del Boy to entertain - and he's really good!)

Myself, I got into this because I think I do a better job of it than half of the guys I've hired for my own childrens parties - plus it was almost a natural progression from my wife's little maternity project (Bouncy Castles!!)

And finally - I think I preferred the Rik & Nik version of Big fish - though the actions for the BTB version are easier to do and the kids never got the references to raving ;)
