The majority will probably go for Connery. Brosnan was a pretty good Bond though, and Daniel Craig was great in his Bond movie too.

Daniel craig???? Daniel Craig????? noooooooo chav bond ........ jeans and a sweater and drives a ford????????

Mr. Connery was the essence of sauve yet rugged and tough with an iron will.

as opposed to Daniel craigs iron willy (if youve seen the film you know what i mean)

But he was the first actor to play him. Probably no point in adding him as I don't think anyone would've seen it unless they are hardcore Bond fans. None of the copies of his version of Casino Royal commercially available have the ending on them.

Can I say here and now that the best Bond was Roger Moore.

For me, his humour was better than Sean Connery's, which made his films more entertaining than Connery's.

There is also a factual reason why Moore was better than Connery.

James Bond was an English agent, and Roger Moore is an English actor.

Unless I'm mistaken, Connery is Scottish...making his Bond much less believable & convincing.

I rest my case.

The best James Bond has to be one of the two English actors to play him...Moore or Craig.

Simple as that!

From Wiki...

Sir Thomas Sean Connery (born 25 August 1930) is a retired Scottish actor and producer who is perhaps best known as the first actor to portray James Bond in cinema, starring in seven Bond films.

Sir Roger George Moore KBE (born 14 October 1927) is an English actor. He may be best known for portraying two British action heroes, Simon Templar in the television series The Saint from 1962 to 1969, and James Bond in seven films from 1973 to 1985.

Just because Connery was the first actor to play Bond, that doesnt make him the best. As I've already said, he wasn't even the same nationality as James Bond!

Being a massive Bond fan, I just need to correct something else.

Although Connery starred in seven Bond films, one of them does not count, as "Never say never again" was not an official Bond movie (Roger Moore was playing Bond at the time when it came out).

Connery starred in 6 official Bond movies, but Moore starred in 7...more than any other who played the part.

No he wasn't, he was the first big screen bond (see Tony's post). Both Barry Nelson & Bob Holness had played Bond prior to Connery (on TV & radio respectively)

As I've already said, he wasn't even the same nationality as James Bond!
So Mel Gibson shouldn't have played William Walace or Mad Max for that matter Being American as opposed to a Scot or Australian. Liam Neeson shouldn't have been Rob Roy MacGregor & Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman shouldn't have had their parts in Far and Away (actually that one is fair enough, those accents were truly appalling)

I am not saying that at all.

My point is that the best & most convincing actor to play a part is usually someone of the same nationality & therefore with the same NATURAL accent as the person they are portraying.

You've just agreed that that's the case with Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman in Far & away...and I wonder what Scottish people honestly think of Mel Gibson's "Scottish" accent in Braveheart?

Maybe one of our Scottish members can answer that one!

I'm pleased to see I'm not the only one to vote for George Lazenby. I thought he played Bond very closely to the character in the original books.

Second choice would be Roger Moore, because he brought the dry humour and "double-entendre" as well as having tyhe best gadgets by far.

I've never liked Sean Connery as Bond... the fight sequences were very unconvincing... always far too easy for him to win... while Roger Moore always had to use his wits to gain the upper hand over a stronger opponent.

I have to agree he did play the part very well...but was 'conned'...used or cheated out of future parts....roles as James bond....

From Wiki
During the film's production, Lazenby's manager Ronan O'Rahilly talked him into refusing a seven-movie contract on grounds that the James Bond character was out of touch with the times; Lazenby later stated that he regretted the decision not to continue playing Bond.

Unless I'm mistaken, Connery is Scottish...making his Bond much less believable & convincing.I've voted Connery too, although for me Roger Moore is a close second. I say this because I think Moore had a bit too much humour, for my preference. OK, it's in Bond's character to be cheeky and witty, but it has to be a balance of that and the grave (life & country threatening) situation is he is in.

So Mel Gibson shouldn't have played William Walace or Mad Max for that matter Being American as opposed to a Scot or Australian.

Here we go again...

Born in the US, yes, but at least he lived in Australia from the age of 12 until he was 26 or so. His paternal Grandmother lived in Australia prior to moving to the States, so Gibson's father was the first American-born of his family.

In response to Rob's dead horse of the relative English-ness of actor's playing Bond - many people born outside of the UK would agree that an Edinburgh Scots accent is generally more comprehensible than a great many "truly British" alternatives.

Also worth noting that, as a secret agent, he'd be adopting all manner of accents for geographical authenticity ;)

Lazenby doesn't get a fair shot from most "fans" because he only did the one film.

I wonder why?

The Bond film before Lazenby's took $111 million at the box office and the one after it took $116 million.

How much did Lazenby's take? Only $87 million.

Lazenby was the only Bond actor whose first film took less at the box office than the previous film. Go figure!

Corabar Steve
15-01-2008, 12:49 PM
Because it was the first not to feature Connery. Don't forget different actors playing the same main role in a series of films is a relatively new concept. Even now people accept it on TV more so than in the movies (Darkman 2 Robocop 3 spring to mind) It was only really accepted with the Batman films of the late 80s & 90s. Moore took a while to be accepted by the fans for the same reason, although his stint as the Saint helped him out some.

Maybe also down to the fact Lazenby's interpretation was markedly different to Connery (at the same time more suave & more gritty. More akin to the books, which the bulk of the films' fans wouldn't have read).

Moore's version of Bond ramped up the suaveness & to an extent campness, but lacked the grit of Lazenby, the books, or even Connery. The Moore Bond era became something akin to Adam West's turn as Batman (remember the original Batman comic books were also a lot darker than their early screen adaptations). Something it only really fully recovered from during the Brosnan era

rob1963
15-01-2008, 01:03 PM
Moore took a while to be accepted by the fans

Maybe not as long as you think, as his first film took $45 million more at the box office than Connery's last film...even though it cost less to make.

I'm only going by documented accounts on fan reaction, as opposed to box office take. & there's no denying that if a film is a corker ( as Live & let die was (possibly the most spectacular Bond film to date)) it will get a good reputation & therefore gross more than merely a good film.

That's all fair enough, although for me the most spectacular Bond movie was probably The spy who loved me.

With the pre-title sequence where Bond skiis off that massive rock, removes his skiis & eventually opens his parachute, the car that becomes a submarine, Jaws, and Stromberg's underwater world, that film had it all.

Considering how long the Bond movie series has been going on now, I don't think Box Office takings can be compared relatively. There are all sorts of social and financial factors to take into account at the time of each release.

You could make better comparisons by taking the annual gross Box Office takings, and using that as a reference :)

'Twice as much action' promised... am I the only one who sees this as a negative thing? I thought the earlier films had a good mixture of character, plot, humour and action. Nowadays, they seem to put the emphasis on car chases and special effects.

If Sean Connery has the vote, it shows how mis-guided the voters were!

The person best qualified to say who James Bond really is was his creator, Ian Fleming...and I believe his first choice to play the part was Roger Moore.

I rest my case!

The original writer is just one opinion, the general viewing public is the majority decision, Rob! :)

I'm sure there's some way to morph Rob's comments about Roger Moore being he best Bond by virtue of being English through the classic line in Blackadder about being as English as the Queen, I just can't figure out how ;)
