Going rates?

Hya a friend of mine is setting up again after a 7 year absence from mobile discos.
At the moment he is charging roughly £150 per show, his setup is roughly 4k and all top speck Peavey amps, speakers, mixing desk etc. and using the Numark Director with a high spec DJ mixer for the music side of things with lighting to match i.e Martin etc. 2 large star boxes 4` x 4`and longer light boxes for the front end, when all setup in a large venue the show spans roughly 30` but can obviously be scaled down for smaller venues including the sound system as in full size he is using 2 x 18" folded bins with 2 x 15" straight facing bass bins and 15" mid/tops all on own high powered amps so the sound moving is better and run at 8Ω so is a pretty good sound and not being over driven.
We are in Cornwall, any pointers would be greatly accepted.

What sort of prices we are charging?

Personally i have a 'goal' rig type set up with 2 dmx scanners, 2 p250 moving heads, 2 colour blades, 2 tomahawks, patriot, icolour and 2 led par cans. (and various other bits and bobs) with a gemini active sound system..

I charge between 150 - 300 (I'm in Dorset) but this depends on type of event, how far, how many people, how long etc... and I do not charge per type of set up.... if there is space they get it all... if not I scale it down.

Hi Karl (& his mate !:) ) , Welcome to the Forum, nice to know we're increasing representation from the Duchy ;)
Sounds like your rig is very impressive :cool:

First thing he'll need to do for sure is scale down 'cos apart from Truro City Hall (now HfC), Eden, or Falmouth Pavilion there aren't many venues in these parts that will accommdate 10m of frontage and 4k of full-on sound. In fact I often have to reduce my own humble 3m to fit in the space available.

I would think that dependant on the occasion £150 - 200 for 5 hours is pretty much on the mark for this area when restarting and building a client base.

Hya Rob #2 maybe you know of have heard of him from the past MAD MAX or also under "SKY HIGH ROADSHOW" and st Austell based, he was around for a long, long time and used to do allot of the military events in Cornwall and Devon and generally dealt with an agent "http://www.hartbeat.co.uk/".

As it stands im pretty new do DJ work but have learned a great deal over the past few months while he has been buying all the gear and setting up etc.
My job has been burning all the back catalogue and new CDs to MP3 and organizing the new mixes and doing roadie work and the mixing at the shows, thats an art in its self lol.

Max does know his stuff but as it stands with being out of it for a while due to health problems he isn’t sure 100% on the going rates, he doesn't want to be under cutting other DJs and at the same time doesn't wanna be over charging to be honest that’s the biggest question at the moment.
Apparently the full show as it stands is actually around 20` not 30`as I first stated, he has opted for a large show as he is also back with his agent so some of the larger places in Plymouth etc. could again be on the cards for the future but also be able to scale down if we need to which is the case at the moment as we have only had such as pubs and small community halls so far as we have only been up and running since early December.:rolleyes:
O yeh almost forgot although its pretty much 4k I doubt it will be used to that, it just means the power is there if needed and not being flogged to death.:D

I wish i had someone to buy gear but me use it when i started :D

As how much to charge, well that would depend on a few factors. Im in Lincolnshire (not exactly the most happening place in the world) and normally charge between 150 and 300 quid for the standard stuff, birthdays, parties etc and more for weddings.
Like has already been mentioned, there wont be a lot of scope for a 4k system unless its outdoor work or very large venues, that amount of power is only needed for live bands and things. Also sounds like a lot of gear to carry round when 2k would be more than ample.

Hya rocketroadshow yeh is some power mate, one of the other reasons for having a band type sound system is that Max also used to do the show cases for his agent so all the other acts on the night simply tapped in to his sound system via his desk mixer so less potential overall problems as there were less setup time for acts and less to go wrong plus he was paid more :D

Its a bit ott for a mobile disco to me but hey he is buying the gear lol :D
The good thing is that its also rigged to a 32 band per side graphic so even though its not running at full power it sounds crystal clear and with a fantastic bass sounds fantastic when playing "children" the acoustic sounds like its in the same room:)
