Anybody using this kind of stand?

Hya folks we are considering buying one of the DJ. deck / goalpost stands so we can place effects in the center, we dont really want to go down the goal post road were you have to have stands at either side but rather the one in the pick below so we can put all the amps and mixing gear on the platforms so is all tidy, then we would just use the traditional T-bars at either end and not restricted on the width if we go at full width of the show.

Does anybody use these and how good are they?

I have a stand like that--Giraffe basic type of thing--cost £30 secondhand--:D

I dont have 3 million light effects so suits my smaller set up when im doing a Disco based night. 2 Moonflowers 2 dynatwins and four large coloured floodlights.

You need to be careful if working on a sloped surface--use blocks to get everything on the level otherwise it could tip over:eek:

Mine bolts together so its a pain putting together and dismantling--extra time

Some people with decent size vans roll up with them ready prepared bolted together:D guy that sold me mine did that:D

Should do a job for you--theres no winching so pretty simple using lighting effects on clamps on square goalpost.

Looking again I can see bolts in the top bar--DONT try and use those get hanging clamps otherwise youll be there all night trying to screw them in place.

Im sure more regular DJs than myself will have other thoughts!!!

I think these stands are really good. when you get the hang of them they only take a few mins to put tougether and take down and when flat packed takes next to no room in the van. shelves can be abit difficult to get hold of for these types of stands. i think these look better and more pro than the goal posts.

Just to say the shelves can be a couple of bits of suitable sized plywood with restraining stops screwed in place--

Thanks for your replies, yeh I can see how uneven floors could be a possible problem.
We would probably make our own boards for them with ply and then carpeted.
I know with this model only having the single cross bar it may be a bit under strength but shouldn't be a problem as its only to hold LED types as the Martins will be on the outside stands or probably a couple on the center if in a smaller venue.
They do look neat and tidy though

Thats all i use just two ply wood boards not very flash but does the job.
you should have no problems with it being to weak they're suprisingly strong. you could probbaly hang all your lights off it.

Just don't forget the cable ties.:)

Agree with that--providing you bolt the centre section together properly it will take a lot of weight.

Save for a bit longer & get the Ultimax version. The Original & the best.

We've tried virtually all the cheaper immitations on the market & they've all broken, the first we bought (Ultimax) is still going strong & the others have been replaced with Ultimax.

agreed , i invested in an ultimax before christmas ... everyone that has been out with me at first has said "it cost how much??????????? for a stand????"

but

all by the end have said "ok yeah well worth it and a nice piece of kit"

I paid 80 pound for my 4' Girraffe stand and in the picture, it looks like they've just added a stronger top/lighting bar. So if they are selling at 170, thats like 90 quid just for the top section, overpriced in my opinion but hey thats just the UK, rip off :rolleyes:

Yeh I think they are an ideal choice and so tidy when everything is in situe, they remind me of OCTAPLUS leg systems for fishing boxes, they have every conceivable extra so to make a pleasure to use.

All the pieces on the giraffe version are at least 1cm smaller across than their Ultimax counterparts, making the Ultimax version a lot more sturdy.

Also the Giraffe & Prolight versions develope a worrying tendancy to wobble from side to side after a while.

including the DJ in my case usually :D :D :D :D really though they are fantastic stands and very sturdy but lightweight and easy to move about.

not at all a rip off in my opinion as you get what you pay for as with most things , its just sadly a British mentality to usually gravitate towards the cheapest option.

I am sure the ultimax is the dogs and worth the money. We have the Giraffe (£85ish) and it is serviceable. On the bar we have as a maximum 2 x ssc2 scanners, datamoon, impossiled, double derby, strobe and 4 x par36 spots across the top. Well loaded, but taking care to keep the bar balanced and concentrating the weight close to the uprights as far as possible makes a stable rig. With our 2 amps on the mid bars and decks/mixer on the topto add some weight its pretty stable. The feet are adjustable so you can make allowance for uneven floor.

To keep cables tidy we use double sided velcro cut from a roll from CPC much better than cable ties - seehere (http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Electrochemicals,+Adhesives+&+Service+Aids/Velcro+Fasteners/VELCRO/229016330999TN16MM/displayProduct.jsp?sku=SA01487)

Im using the 4ft prolight version which has lasted well but I do worry about the wobbly top bar. It's ok with some weight on though

So an Ultimax is going to be one of this years upgrades

All models work, just the dearer ones work better and longer than the cheaper ones by the looks of things. Ultimax is undoubtedly the best, just make sure you get the Top Bar you require, as Ultimax seem to have a vast choice. Different bars can make a big differerence in price. Most models
( probably all, but I'm not sure) have screw in feet, so the stand sits on four corners, rather than two flat bars.

Well the ultimax winch stand isnt hard to set up at all, simply slot te middle sections into the end pieces of teh stands, screw on the bolts, thats the base up, Then get the winch pods and slide them into the side sections and lock them off, All you have to do then is connect the 2 top bar sections together and then attatch it to the top.

This is one of the strongest stands that i have ever bought, I can have this stand up and ready for getting loaded with gear with in 7 minutes.

Yep, I've got one and they are very good.

but it only holds 50kg over head so dont think it would be enough for 4 i rock 5s hid and 2 irock 5b hid a fire cracker strobe a duel 100mw green laser and i am thinking of getting another 2 lasers and maybe an acme impossiled so dont think it could cope

All of these stands are good, but are very easily toppled over as I found out to my cost when a lunatic came flying into the front of it at a gig. I had my entire rig knocked over, lighting, cd decks laptop, mixer, amp the whole lot.

I will not use the top bar anymore and use separate trusses and stand now for lighting.

Firstly, which make stand were you using?

I wouldn't say that they are easily toppled over, as they wouldn't be able to sell them for safety reasons.

I have a 6' giraffe one and a 4' prolight one. Another DJ I know has an ultimax one and he has had his knocked over as well.

When you have your lights on the truss they are very top heavy.

Mine was knocked over well and truly by the guy who was messing around on the dancefloor, slipped and went full pelt into the stand and the level of the top shelf.

Hya fellas going back to these stands, at the moment I can only afford the
4`Giraffe as am setting up a completely new disco.
Can you get star cloths to fit the 4`stands and how well do they look when fitted to these kind of stands?
My only concern really is that the Giraffe stand is only 16" deep and my flight case is at least 20" a 10u slanted mixer top so would have to hang over at least 4".

I was thinking of going for a gantry but most seem to be 3mtr probably 1mtr more than I will be able to fit in the some gigs initially and then I would need to get something ells to fit a star cloth to :bang:

Well took delivery of a 4`Giraffe yesterday and quite impressed for the money £88.95 + free delivery.
I do have one question though, why are they so high?
Am not the tallest of blokes at 5`9" but not the smallest either and with my CD flight case being 4u high its way up in the air, need to be about 6` 2" + for it to be a the right height for comfort.
I have thought of taking the base plates of, chopping 3" off then getting my mate to weld them back on trouble is a star cloth would be too long then :cry:
Need to get some kind of bag to fit it all in to :rolleyes:

These are extremely hard wearing.

As for the height matter, I bought a 6' and a 4' stand to cope with different venues and chopped 6" off one set of uprights. So now I can mix and match width as well as height.

Could have saved yourself a lot of hassle by buying the adjustable Ultimax stand. ;)
