just got first secured gig!

hi guys i hav a secured gig for my mums friend because her freind has a freind going to austrailia so im going to do a disco, i think there are going to be 50-70 people so i should do ok. please give me some advise , (this is for all ages)

You might have to be a bit more specific about advice. What do you want to know that isn't already here in the forum somewhere?

Just joking....be honest...they should all know you. If you don't have the track, suggest another by the same artist.

Don't tell them you have it as they will pester you all night for the track.....if you get....'Call yourself a DJ'....be cool...:cool: ....and say that you don't have every track ever released.......but you should be OK....


Oh yes i nearly forgot.....'Have a good 'un and relax'....you'll be fine.....:)

Some DJ's say they'll play it later (but obviously don't!)...

...and some say they don't have it & ask for an alternative.

If I was you, I'd go with the latter!

as i found out on new years eve, this woman was pestering me for black sabbath paranoid, i said 'i love black sabbath myself, (i really do) i'll try & squeeze it in if i can later on in the night' well, that was it, she must have got her husband, son, to ask me at least 10 times between them, and she asked me herself about 5 times, in the end i had to say 'i can't play it because it's not the right crowd, if i play it now the dancefloor will empty and you'll be the only one in here who's getting into it'

i think we came to a compramise on led zep's rock n roll

i would of loved to play war pigs, sabra cadabra, never say die, tracks like that, but you've gotta go with the crowd

Well done on your first booking,
As to regards of music that you haven't got i would just say "sorry not got that one" take what ever comment they give you with a pinch of salt, Us Dj's cannot carry every track, I have about 25,000 tracks and still have people asking me for stuff which i don't have.

well done just relax and enjoy your self and try to read the dance floor if your playing a type of music that is keeping the dance floor full stick with it you will soon find out what they will dance to and what they wont. Speak slowly and clear on the mic and you will have a great time.

congrats. hope all goes to plan, as steve said he had 27k of tracks, i was doing a gig with a friend of the family he had just under 50k of tracks and someone wanted the "the boys version of heartbroken" which is a home made song flying around limewire and p2p and we didnt have it and he got annoyed:( im still waiting for my fisrt real gig on my own since ive been advertising. tell us how it goes. talk soon

But you'll only need about 80, possibly even less.

Thing to do is to go through your collection and make a list of all the danceable tracks you have, maybe sub-classifying them into decades or genre.

As this is your first gig it is essential that you have a memory jogger list to work from - indeed many seasoned pros still do exactly this - I do in any case. Spend some time to get this done properly - actually play the tracks, and maybe ask the opinion of another person or two as well.

Ultimately, anyone can pay danceable music for 15 - 20 minutes, but playing for 4 hours? That's a completely different ball game as they'll soon run out of ideas unless they are prepared.

Good luck with the gig - try to enjoy the music you are playing.

just to say this is a 2 hour disco and i have most of the songs sorted out... so i hope i will do well but im sort of worried of some echo in the church.......

what ive learned from my time on here is when you are at a echoie place use your EQ on your mixer to try and drain it out.

and for you CD's just put them in a certain order in your CD case and then on the inside of the lid tpye up what albums/singles are where. so you no where they are and helps you to remember.

thanks i also want to ask about how to tidy up lighting cables well because i just put a ziptyre and let the wires hang from the lighting stand help.

have you got any reusable cable ties or just normal ones? you can also wrap the leads around the stand. but dont have the lead being streched always give it a bit of a lee-way.

Don't worry too much about the echo.
It'll sound worse to you behind the gear, but probably not so bad out front.
Maybe back off the mids & highs a bit if the hard surfaces make the system sound too harsh, although as (if) the place fills with people the acoustics will change for the better.
