Hi,advice needed please

Hello to everyone. i have registered mainly to get some advice on starting djing.i only intend to do small functions/parties/weddings,and also karaoke in local pubs/clubs. i was thinking about purchasing kam imix 100 for all my ipod music to play and a numark kmx02 karaoke/twin cd player, but what size speakers would best suit and would it need to be run through amp ? as you may have guessed im not to on top of the technical side but i love music from 60;s 70;s and 80;s and feel i am best suited at this end of the market. also any help in which lighting effects,im not after a massive display but my gigs will be purely for pleasure, i will leave the main djing to you guys and girls who do a fab job.if anyone could help,many thanks.john

As speakers go depends how much you want to spend and the power you really require. Must speakers do require being run tho an amp but is possiable to get active speakers with built amp depends which route you want to take.
As lighting goes how much are you looking into spending? simple light setups can be bought quite cheaply.

Hi spudcooper,thanks for reply. i have 2 x 300 watt active speakers,would this be enough for small sized hall (150 people) or can i run more through same speaker cable or seperate amp. as for lighting i have some bits already but i suppose £200 would be about what i would have to spend.

I would think that would be enough power for around 100-200 people easily. to my knowledge you can not run from amp into a active speaker. this maybe something you wish to upgrade at a later date.
what lighting do you currently own as that may come in usefull. what type of effect do you wish to create? there are many different effects out there on the market so you have to choose what effects you want carefully and if they will work well with each other.

My understanding is there is a licensing issue here. My colleague had a lengthy discussion with PPL regarding Ipods just a couple of weeks ago, and was informed that whilst it is acceptable for a client or guest to provide their own Ipod and say "please play this Ipod Mr DJ - then return it to me", it is not acceptable for the sound company/DJ to turn up using Ipods as a professional sound source, irrespective of whether a digital licence is held or not. Apparently this is something to do with restrictions imposed by Apple. However if the playback device is an MP3 player, and not an Ipod, then provided a digital licence is held, there should be no problems.

How can Apple possibly impose restrictions on using a playback device? They don't own the files on the player do they - unless they are downloaded from Itunes.

All depends how much dosh you want to spend. Work out a budget and then have a mooch around, like google, and find the best gear in your price range/budget.

I'd advise looking round the Gallery section of this 'ere forum, find one or two pictures or videos that you like the look of and would like to aspire to, and go for that gear! Most people here are really helpful and like to wave their willies (common euphemism for showing off their kit :D ) so if you're not sure then ask before committing the cash. Some budget gear is OK but there's a lot of tat. You'll be better off with two good quality £100 lights than half a dozen ebay specials...

The gallery page can be like a big show and tell where you can see something you like and say oh i like that, what is it? type of thing.

Very useful and intresting to see other DJ's setups and the equipment they use.

Excellent advice from our castaway there.;) :D If in doubt, ask about any gear before committing funds to it, someone always has experience of it on here, and will advise. Two of my most useful and impressive lights were a desperation, " what have you got in he shop ?" buy, and were £120 per pair.:D
