Bit of a drive to a gig down country... turns out the bride (and parents, naturally) and a number of the guests were over from Yorkshire so I put to good use the knowledge I've picked up here to play some UK party favourites along with NZ stuff. The most obvious one (being that I've never played anything by them in NZ), was Status Quo 'Rockin' all Over the World', there were a couple of others that were not in my usual Kiwi-Crowd-pleasers play book (but have temporarily forgotten 'em... long weekend), a bit peeved that I'd managed to lose 'Hi-Ho Silver-Lining' though, as I rather think that would've been 'on', too.

Apart from that it was a right royal cheese-fest (Wensleydale?) - I even played two S Club 7 songs (I haven't played any S Club 7 for 18 months).

What???????? No S Club for 18 months?????????????????????????????

Don't tell customs that when you come in, or they won't believe you're a Bona Fide Mobile DJ! ;) :D :D :D :D

What can I say? I haven't had a request for them for nearly twice that (was playing 'Don't Stop Moving' for about a year after it was released, and that was June 2001 in NZ). They're just bigger in the UK than here. Of course if I was a VJ...

...I'd probably just play Rachel's solo stuff ;)

Don't worry, Peter, I redressed the balance last night by playing the orchestral mix of 'Two in a Million' as part of my background set.

S Club 7 fair enough... but Status Quo

They're really not popular in NZ then? It is strange how some artists are massive in some countries, yet unheard of in others. Not that I'm saying Status Quo are 'massive', ah, you know what I'm trying to say :D

I do, and yes, I've only had the Quo requested once in 13 years - unfortunately for the requester I only had 'Caroline', 'Down the Dustpipe' and 'Whatever You Want'... I suspected he wanted something a bit rockier.

Speaking of... does anyone play their cover of 'Fun, Fun, Fun'?

I'd dearly love to say yes, as I think it's wonderful. Sadly, if I'm honest, I don't play it in a main set, only before the dancing takes precedence. As someone who likes to kill two birds with one stone, I regularly play
" Something bout you Baby I like" , for the Tom Jones factor.;)

I generally play 'Burning Down the House' if I need "Tom Jones factor" :D

I've only ever played the (far superior) original

Well, at least in the case of the cover the Beach Boys are on backing vox.

Mind you, I can't imagine the Beach Boys doing 'whatever you want' very well either...

True also, but then again would they want to. Wasn't even the real Quo that recorded it anyway, it's not Quo if there's no Lancaster & Coghlan

So Lancaster and Coghlan form the Status Quorum?

I would have thought it was Parfit and Rossi?

Corabar Steve

Parfit, was the last of the "classic line up" to join Rossi & Lancaster's band

In which year?

Well I don't know about all that Steve, as I wasn't around at the time. The advantage of that, is that any music pre-90s I judge on it's musical merit without being influenced by other factors ;)

In which year?

Not sure but Rossi & Lancaster met, decided to form a band Coghlan was already in place when Parfit joined.

The stuff Rossi & Parfit have recorded with what amounts to 3 session musicians, is of little or no musical consequence.

Just checked, Rossi Lancaster & Coghlan were together as a band since 63, Parfit joined just before Pictures of matchstick men was released in 68

So the band as we know them have been together since 1968, which is when Picturres of matchstick men was released.

Meaning, that the four piece band have been together for all the major singles and albums and the two front men are Rossi and Parfit.

So if you formed a band & I joined it as singer 5 years later, because I'm the frontman it's now my band is it?

It's the same as saying Black Sabbath is Ozzy's band, Geezer Butler & Tony Iomi formed the band, Ozzy joined at a later date.

Sorry Steve, you sound like a schoolboy debating who's gang it is.

I don't really care about band politics, what I do know is that Parfit and Rossi have fronted the band for a long time and that they've been together since 1968 when the first hit was.

But the situation s now more akin to a singer having gone solo & playing his band's songs with a backing band (as Ozzy did when he first left Sabbath) as opposed to one cohesive unit, the other 3 may just as well be manequins with MP3 players fitted inside them as your last statement
what I do know is that Parfit and Rossi have fronted the band for a long time seems to agree with
