Gigging when you're under the weather

I've just got home from a wedding which was less than 2 minutes up the road, but it was a fairly long one (7pm until 12.30am), and although it went very well, I'm glad it's over.

Just over a week ago, I had my ingrown toenails done, so they are currently healing & due to the dressings I can only wear my soft casual summer shoes at the moment.

Apart from that, I picked up an ear infection last week. I'm on anti biotics, but they've only just started working, so I was half deaf at the gig & also had a really bad ache in my left ear & on the whole left side of my head.

Last night, I also picked up some kind of eye infection...so apart from looking like someone from a horror film, my eyes have been mattery, so I've been unable to see properly.

Therefore, I did a gig when I had sore feet, was half deaf & also half blind!

This got me thinking...

...What have YOU had wrong with you & still gone to do a gig?

Well I have 2 impacted wisdom teeth on my left side (top and bottom tooth) one of which has grown into my jaw muscle so I cant open my mouth fully. And had them since july 2003. They got pretty bad in november last year so got an appointment to get them out, but been putting it off to get the christmas gigs etc done. Have to wait till Feb now to get them out. The term agony can only be exrpessed by people with impacted wisdom teeth. Im sure those of you who have had them know what its like. One infection after another etc.

I've gigged quite a few times with bad flu's. The worst has to when I had glandular fever.

The toughest gig I had wasn't due to illness but I was definitely under the weather - I did a wedding a few days after my dad was tragically killed last August, definitely the toughest gig of my career, I couldn't let the bride down though.

I don't think I've had anything as bad as you guys... I'm just back from DJing from 7 till 3 with only one break to go to the toilet, which was pretty exhausting.

I did go out once when I had food poisoning, and had to keep a bucket behind the decks. I didn't use it, I think I had already emptied all I could before I went out, but I'm sure we all know what it's like feeling constantly nauseous. Sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and get on with it!

Just think, an easier option--you could have popped down the road last night to my gig in Barnes and helped me--I even had a trolley ready for the tear drops:D :D :D

There was only a hundred screaming teenagers to contend with for four hours--:eek: :eek: :eek:

But you wouldnt have heard them or seen them:D :D :D

I can probably beat everyone on this, as I have done several gigs suffering from kidney stones...and believe me, you don't ever want those.

I had an op to get rid of them, but this was when they first appeared.

Very very painful and uncomfortable.

I did shows last year and was having radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer 5 days a week for 9 weeks. It was very tiring and I felt like crap. Carol did a lot of lifting and carrying and ended up having a hernia op.

Apart from that, as I have 2 discs missing from my spine and a 3rd crushed from an accident in 1972, I have constant pain in my back.

I doubt it :D :D bladder stones , I was rushed into hospital straight from the gig by my roadie with a blood pressure higher than that of some stroke victims , I was told at the time had extensive bladder reconstuction (without too much detail i now go to the toilet through a tube) and my urologist to this day still hasn't seen so many bladder stones in a patient , they were growing on the outside of the bladder as there was no room left inside , had the onset of septicemia and was later told if I had relied on over dosing with pain killers to get by for another 14 days there would have been nothing anyone could have done.

after the surgery my first gig back (after 8 months) at the same venue was done with 52 staples down my stomach and 2 catheters inserted.

and of course lately I have done one or two with two screws in my ankle on crutches etc.

all in a days work .... put up .... shut up .... and get on with it , as the other choices are rubbish.

The few gigs that I have done with serious stomach upsets have actually ended with me feeling much better (I thin kI must sweat the infection out or something).

By the way, Darren, I haven't had stones, as you say, but until you've had a burst eardrum don't scoff too hard. It wasn't at a gig... I was quite young and don't remember anything about it, from the timer it happened to whan I got back from hospital is blank. My mum tells me that I screamed non-stop until I was put under in the ambulance some 15-20 minutes later.

I can't beat anyone particularly, but I did do one gig with an external fixator on my femur and managed to get any others covered, because I really couldn't have done any more. The wire and pin wounds were leaking like mad for about three days afterwards. Have decided against posting a picture. :-)

I can't beat anyone for severity of injury, but I did a few gigs without the use of my right arm a few years back. (due to falling off of my bed & severing nerves & muscle in my shoulder)

How did you manage to change tracks with only one hand? Even to use the mic, you'd need two hands, was someone helping you?

Mic stand, push button mic control on the mixer, long cues & judicious use of a crossfader. (I was using mostly vinyl at the time too)

Here's a non-scary photo of the worst condition I ever DJ'd in.

Its actually my long leg x-rays showing the fixation at the top of my thigh and also the frame around the lower part. All the pins, screws and wires are there too. You can see the breaks in the bone too. Remember these are only x-rays so won't upset the squeamish! :-)
