Whats the best hardrive to choose?

Im wanting a 2.5" external harddrive, but im not sure which is the best to get, any suggestions, thanks.:)

Strongly recommend the Freecom Toughdrive Pro. They're a bit more expensive but they are encased in a rubbery material that literally lets them bounce. I've had 3 for about 2 years and they've been abused but never let me down. They don't need external power when used with a laptop or a Numark d2.

It's the same with anything, lights, CD players, speakers, whatever. Which is why we advise against "What's best" type posts in the forum rules :sj:

For some products there are just so many options that you could conceivably have as many suggestions as replies

I have a seagate. Does the job. Although would a non powered usb drive take longer to find the tracks?

Errr... no.

That would be affected by the drive spin rate, onboard read cache and interface type.

Generally speaking the drive spin rate is the biggest influence. Mine are 5400rpm and are perfectly fast enough for my needs.

I use powered hard drives that doesn't look powered? does that make a difference ? maybe someone in the know could answer that? just a thought that popped into my head....

i know you can get the usb key things but they are usually only about 8gb or something an external hd is say 250gb no idea if that makes any difference?

The Freecom is powered by the USB connection. This can be problematic with some devices, but I use these successfully on laptops and the Numark d2. In case of problems there is a power socket on the back for a direct DC input. Alternatively, common advice is to connect to a powered USB hub.

Made an order and just recieved my new Freecom Toughdrive 160gb and so far very impressed. I have just uploaded about 3/4 of my music on to it and there is no delay or slow down speed when uploading.

So far so good.

The real test is when i use it for dj'ing. I think ill take my normal hard drive as a back up just incase.

Had to buy this as my dj external hard drive power supply packed up and i wernt quite to sure on to change it or get it fixed. So i thought i would treat myself and get a new one.
