My point in this thread, regardless of if I'm paying £25 or £47, is I am going to see a legendary 60s Rock 'n' Roll band, who influenced many bands both in their day & ever since. For instance, both the Rolling Stones & the Kinks picked up tips from the Sonics.

? & the Mysterians being another case in point. They never had any UK chart success (unless you count the Stranglers cover of 96 Tears) & yet until re released on CD a couple of years back their album was one of the most sought after in record collecting circles (either the original, or bootleg pressings thereof)

Why bother commenting on something that you obviously have no knowledge of in the first place? Within the 60s Garage genre there are several bands considered legends / legendary that may even not have had any chart success even in US regional charts much less the UK singles chart. Other examples would include Count Five, the Seeds, the already mentioned ? & the Mysterians, Moby Grape & the Trashmen.

As I said earlier just because you know nothing about something does not change it's status for somebody who does.

Mojo magazine have called them legends & I for one (amongst many) agree with them.

Rob, I think sometimes you only read what you want to see.

Re: Led Zeppelin - I'm not sure exactly how many singles they've released, but it is defnitely true to say that they've had minimal UK chart success due to their policy of preferring not to release singles. Yet they are still regarded as 'legendary' within the rock scene, and I'm sure you've heard of them? I think you need to stop using the UK top 40 as your benchmark - it might serve as a good guide for the music you might play at a gig, but it is fairly irrelevant in terms of real world music.

By the way, I used Led Zeppelin as an example for this point only, as I knew you couldn't claim to 'have never heard of them'.

The clue is in the last word of your definition- " renowned ". I reckon that doesn't necessarily imply Fame, simply recognition of talent.

All listed artists are well-known outside their sphere of direct influence. The jazz artists mentioned are well-known (by name, at least) outside of jazz circles, etc.

As someone has said, chart success doesn't necessarily equate to critical acclaim and renown.

How many number ones have you never played? More than you've played, I'll warrant.

This is kind of synonymous with classical composers who become recognised for their achievements once they're de-composing.

I can assure you my age is accurate. I was born the year the Sonics split up.

My love of all things 60s came from listening to my mum's record collection during my formative years.

I know I'm in for a good night (if the youtube clips at the bottom of the page I linked to are anything to go by), but it's the Sonics, so I don't care (other than not being able to see them at their original peak (at the time when they were influencing such bands as the Stones the, Kinks & the Troggs (a host of others all over the US)))

I'd have to say, it was probably one of the best gigs I've been to (& I've seen thousands of bands from Bjorn Again (close enough to Abba) & the Counterfeit Stones through Eric Clapton & Elton John to Metallica & ZZ Top & countless pub bands).

Even the appalling sound couldn't spoil it. They didn't move around much, but the energy coming from a bunch of pensioners could put most teen bands to shame! I wish I had tickets for Sunday.

Since this thread was active, they have had tracks on 2 adverts (one was Ford Transit, can't remember the other) & are currently on a trailer for something on E4 with their cover of Richard Berry's* "Have Love, Will Travel" (a song previously heard in various forms on various LV adverts)(Not bad for a band nobody has heard of)

Suck on that Weakest Link!





They continue to tour & record to this day.
