Forgive me for switching sports momentarily, but this popped up in a debate on Friday night (and is related to nationality)
Of all the Premiership teams realistically challenging for a European place this season, the nationalities of the respective managers/coaches are as follows..
Arsenal - French
Man United - Scottish
Chelsea - Israeli
Everton - Scottish
Liverpool - Spanish
Aston Villa - Irish
Man City - Swedish
Blackburn - Welsh
Sorry, as you were... :p

Nice family history and actually I do have Australian relations.
My greand parents were Welsh, hence my surname, but I was born in this country and am proud to be English.
I think if someone is born somewhere and has lived there all their live then they are that nationality.
It seems that some people pick what suits them when it comes down to it.

My father was welsh my mother is a mix of English, welsh & Scots, that makes Wales the majority shareholder in my genes. As far as I'm concerned that makes me Welsh. I didn't choose to be born or live my childhood in England & I certainly wasn't going to move away from a very good job (earning much more than most of my peers) at the age of 17 when I left home, for the sake of National pride.
You are what your ancestors were. Not where you were born (unless they work out the same).
In reality that makes me more of a half breed I suppose, but as genetically I have more Welsh blood, it's logical that that is what I am. It would be dishonest to claim to be English when it has the least amount of my genetic make up.
As for choosing what suits, don't you think I'd choose a team that was better than being good only about once every 4 years?

Well, what would I be? I was born in England, as my mother is English and my father met her when he was in the RAF. I lived in England for 8 years until 1990, when my parents divorced. I have lived in Scotland since then, and have only returned to England 4 times. Some would say I'm English, but I feel Scottish, although I will settle for British :D
Corabar Steve
10-02-2008, 08:50 PM

I would say it's down to your genetic make up. Is your mum Scots? & was there much "intermingling" involving your ancestors?
