Buying a new radio mic

Decided to get a uhf radio mic. Main application would be for speeches and voice overs at wedding fayres etc and occasional disco use) . Would not be used much so couldnt justify paying out huge sums for one.
Have been looking at thomman and like the look of this http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_tws16ht_863mhz.htm

But this one is similar for less money

I have to order some things from thomman anyway so postage isnt a worry. Anyone use either of these or can tell me the difference? And would they be ok for my intended use.
Or if anyone can spot another mic that would be better on the thomman site for say a max budget of £150 please let me know.

Don't know about the Thomann ones myself, only thing I could say is I don't think they sell rubbish. Many on here use JTS, and rate them highly. I'm not sure they have one at a similar price, though I could be wrong, I know these lads sell a big JTS range.

There is a review on the page you linked to, and after reading this, I think they would fit Spin's needs fairly well. Sadly for me, the review said they were not too hot on feedback rejection, so still looking like JTS for me.

The Shure PG range represent excellent value for money where the budget or application does not warrant an SM or Beta

But do be very careful if buying on Ebay, as there are lots of counterfeit Shures out there :eek:

I've got 2 x UHFSM58s, 2 x PG58s and a couple of wired PG58s.

They are very similar in quality, but I find the PGs lack definition on the top end compared to the SMs.

I did a side by side comparison test and the results were fairly similar. I use the PGs for karaoke, but they could easily be used for DJing too.


But do be very careful if buying on Ebay, as there are lots of counterfeit Shures out there :eek:

So I found out a while back...I thought I had the bargain of the century as I bought a switched SM58 for £45 which turned out not to be real...:o

Dare I suggest that as the PG range is classed as a " Budget " range by Shure ( not a derogatory term, just a description) and the JTS ones are higher end in their range, then from what I have heard, the JTS could easily outperform the Shure? :sofa:


PS, there is a shop on Ebay selling JTS systems at £105. ( Lower model of course)

That's not comparing apples with apples. Shure are one of the most respected manufacturers of microphones in the world, and IMHO they probably are the most well known manufacturer. It is commonplace to be asked to provide SM58s, 57s, Beta 58s, Beta 52s, etc... and anyone who is anything in sound is familiar with these industry standard Shure products, the same as they are with the AKG and Sennheiser favourites. The same cannot be said for JTS. I'm not saying they are bad mics, I am saying I have never seen JTS on a rider.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing here, as I'm well aware of Shure quality. I'm just suggesting that sometimes in the quest to have " branded " equipment, it is possible to overlook superior equipment at a lower price, just because it doesn't have the right badge on it. There are many of us on here who sing the praises of a certain midlands based speaker company, as being very cost effective kit, yet some folk will not consider them, as they don't carry the right labels!

To continue your car analogy, what about Skoda and Volkswagen? You pay loads extra simply for the VW badge, and often less kit.
From what I have seen here and elsewhere, I would be keen to compare JTS and Shure systems side by side. Could be interesting.

I have had no feedback on mine. There the bast mics i have heard for the price! I have also had mine thrown across a room and they haven't got a scratch on them!

I use the KAM. Big PLUS is the battery life is amazing - even works a treat on rechargeables. It takes two AAs and they seem to last forever. Excellent range.

Feedback rejection isn't excellent but it's not bad either.

A good budget choice.

Well after the replies I decided to go for a Kam mic set (2 hand helds) . I agree about the jts and the Shure but to be honest I dont intend to use the mic much and the layout for either would probably not be worth it. Besides Iwanted a spare hand mic with it and a new mic for both the shure and the jts cost more than a new complete unit.
Thanks for the comments they did help. I really didnt want to hand a shure mic to a client to use only to be dropped or lost after 1 gig. At least with the kams they are cheap to replace.
