Hi all

I've been sort of DJing for years. I started in my early teens, mixing up tapes in advance for the Saturday night disco on the annual youth club weekend away, trying to anticipate how my mates would react to certain tunes weeks before the event. At university I did more of the same, but occasionally ventured out into the student union to do a couple of gigs. I even managed to do this for my own wedding back in 2006 - five hours of pre-mixed music which seemed to go down very well with the guests - I am crap at mixing but I seem to know what people will dance to.:)

As a teacher I have also "DJ'd" on many school residential trips and also the staff christmas party for the past five years, as well as for a few functions for mates. Over these recent years I have just turned up and played at places that already had the equipment, or told mates to hire the equipment and I would bring the tunes. I am now looking to branch out into mobile DJing, and being a technical imbecile I think I will be spending hours trawling through the forums looking for advice. Please be patient and forgiving if I ask questions that have already been covered.... I will try my best not to :D

Hi guys and thanks for the warm welcome

Sadly it looks like my mobile DJ dreams may be over before I even started. I have spent the last two days trawling through the forum looking for advice, etc and it looks like I may need a little more funds in order to get started.

I had allowed for cost of a basic set-up which I could build on over time, Public Liability Insurance and PAT testing. I had even managed to find out about the PPL Digital DJ Licence as I was intending to use a laptop and hard drive and rip my CD collection onto it. What I hadn't realised was that I would also need to fork out £500+ for an MCPS SG6 Licence.... something I just cannot afford right now. :(

Not that I am going to go away though. I have already found many threads on the forum very illuminating and interesting so I think I will hang around and add to threads whenever I have something (I think) is worth saying.

If i was you i would hold back on the PPL for a while. I dont know much about it but im sure the admin crew will tell you why or maby use the search bar and find it.

Don't do anything about digital licences at the moment.

Talks are still going on and change is in the pipeline.

When all is settled the LWP will be posting on this and other forums to let everybody know what they need, how much it will cost and when it starts.

I have done a lot of searching through the forum and found various threads about it, which has just left me confused :confused: I sort of get the impression that few DJs really know where this is going at the moment. If I am wrong then I would be so grateful if someone could direct me to a thread I may have missed??

It was the MCPS SG6 that blindsided me a little though. I understand the theory behind digital licenses, but the cost??? I need to go back to the drawing board and decide whether I now go down the route of playing CDs, or shelve the dream for a while.

Most if not nearly all (Robbie has one!) won't have the SG6. It was never intended as a DJ licence, but as a dubbing licence, but technology grew faster than the authorities could keep pace with, so it was the only licence that came anywhere near.
