10 inch or 12 inch

Hi Guys

Well as you know from a previouse post I had a little problem with my trailer doors and lost my speakers. DJ Guard won't pay out. Won't be renewing with them.

Anyway, I have had a change of financial circumstances and am looking to replace them with some active speakers. My question is what should I go for. I have a budget of approx £600 and would be looking at 10inch or 12inch drivers at approx 300W RMS a side.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I like the look of the RCF Art 310A and also the DB Technologies Opera Live 402. I am tempted by the RCF being a compact 10inch speaker. But then if I went for the DB Tech everything would match as I have a DB Sub 15.

The thing I am concerned about is, is a 10inch speaker OK for disco use. Would the bass response be good enougth for a small gig without using my sub

I wouldn't personally use 10 inch speakers without subs so it'd probably be better to go for 12" tops so you can use them by themselves for smaller gigs.

Sorry.. mis-read the post. Yes, 10" speakers would be fine if used with a sub or too.

I would only use 10" speakers with subs, 12" tops i only use with gigs that have a max of 70 people then i add the bass bins to give the me the extra if need be.

I would say not.

I have one pair of 10" cabs I use for quizzes and music can be heard perfectly well through them, but there isn't much bass.

Obviously it depends on the cabs you are using, but generally I don't think they'd be man enough for disco use.

well i have the rcf 310a and they sound fantastic and look good easy to lift and put up on stands and from a 10" speaker you will be impressed with the amount of bottom end it puts out.
go to your local place and hear them and match them up to other speakers because there are lots of good powered speakers around

I have severe doubts as to how a 10" speaker can deliver a good sound for anything other than a small pub (even then it might struggle). In saying that, I had doubts that the Mackie SRM450s could cover most function halls, and they do it quite comfortably in my opinion, although I would add that they are only good for small to medium sized venues, with up to around 120 or so guests.

When i was doing in install in my car i was told this.

10" - Anything with a fast punchy bass line

12" - Good for short punchy bass notes and good for longs bass notes like Drum and bass, R&B ect

15" - good for long bass notes.


If it was me i would go for the 12".

They are on a cab which would be an enclosure?

That's not what I meant Tom.

Put a 12" speaker in a car and close the doors and the sound won't go anywhere. Put the same 12" speaker in a hall and it will.

ok. i see. but then again i know this is way off topic but i always wonder why the xmax is always much larger in car audio than pa speakers???

I would say go the 12". Play it safe.

This is mainly because the efficiency of the speaker is low... so it may say 1200w, but in reality could be quieter than a 500w PA speaker with decent efficiency.

Thanks for all the responses guys, if I did go down the 10" route I would more than likely be using my sub every time. So the bass output is not really much of a concern. But I'm still not sure if the mid and highs would be up to it. For the same price as the RCF I can get 12" DB Techs. Decisions decisions.

If you are comparing a 10" speaker to a 12", the 12 will give you more bass; ideal for a wider range of music, whilst the 10" will be better at the higher end.

I'm more interested in the high end, as I will use the sub with them if I have too.

i have the db techs basic 400's and they do me well and with the sub 15 added with them it makes a good sound system in my opinion but then this is my first sound system, but i say it is still good and good for the price aswell.

I havent heard modern 10 or 12 inch speakers which im told are good--Mackie etc but I really cant see 10inch speakers for serious Disco use.

My local DJ supplier is talking to me about an active system for next year but thats got a pair of 15s and a sub--sounds more suitable to me--

But hey you need to LISTEN to these systems out there on a real gig first.

Thanks for all the replys guys, to conclude the thread I have decided to stick with 12" drivers.

I was thinking about the DB Opera Live 402, but I have always been very impressed with my Mackies. So after getting permission from her in doors (which took some doing) I have strechted my budget and purchased a pair of Mackie SRM450's.
