A number of websites have a page of links to other services.

Personally, this is something I've always avoided, as I see the purpose of my website as promoting my OWN business rather than other peoples.

However, I can see one or two possible advantages.

What do you think?

Guess it depends what you're linking to...

... direct competitors would be a bad idea :bang:
... other local businesses you have an affiliation with would be better :)
... other websites you operate for financial gain would be best ;) :p (see sig)

:agree:

I have just started to add a links page firstly to point to local "Wedding" related businesses and they will be doing the same favour. They may have a very good ranking in the search engines, so if they get visited from some one who is looking for say a wedding photographer and you have a link in their site then there's a good chance they may need a disco as well.

I have also linked back to a few wedding sites but you may not have to do that if you may pay for your add with them.

I think google also looks favourably on sites that have links to other sites within them.

Read up about search engine optimization Rob and you'll understand why people have links in and out.

Thanks Darren.

I'm guessing that it helps to improve your Google rating, then, which was one of the possible advantages I was wondering about.

The other being that there are a number of wedding directories which allow you a free listing on their site if you put a link to them on your own site.

Relevant Reciprocal Links = Good for SEO ;)

I've exchanged links with a few other wedding suppliers, so obviously that benefits me too. Also, the main photo on my frontpage was taken by a professional photographer so only fair to credit him on my links page.

Let me play Mr. Cynical here for you:D

I have not got links pages on my two main sites but my Google/Yahoo Rankings are very high.

I have actually put a Wedding video mans link on my home page because he was going to do me a favour--if he doesnt deliver on the favour soon---his link is toast.

Regularly I receive a lot of offers from other allied suppliers to swap links--

Wonder why?

Because they are nowhere and im virtually top---

Is that a good trade off---you decide.

I never or rarely get approached by people who have decent rankings themselves--you decide.

How many people actually LOOK at links pages--I dont.

As VV says its useful if you have an ancillary business--like I do--- so I can link people to specialist services like Western Evenings---now thats a bonus.

YEE---HAW!!!!!!!!!!

Whether all these links help only time will tell by trying--I would be interested to see any hard stats.

I did have a link with a Wedding Piper who approached me--seemed like a good idea--never got an enquiry--so I binned it.

You could get round the reciprocal link thing with Wedding Suppliers by putting it right at the bottom of your home page?

I guess you cant lose trying it--its a cost though to get the page set up and also constantly changed---unless you run your own website admin.

Sorry I cant be more positive--hopefully someone else will come up with some appealing reasons why you should do it--

Maybe I'll have to speak to my web host about it then.

although don't they say that a link you is a plus but a link from you is a negative. or something so they counter balance.
My 2ps worth.

I've never heard that before and I do pretty well in the search engines.
