Try introducing yourself in the Newbies section first. You'll find people more likely to respond to you.

I get everone on the dancefloor and tell them to bring a pound each so 100 people on the dance floor £100 play music and they have to toss the coin in the air and you say heads so if peoples coins have landed on tails they put there pound in a jug and there out and so on and so on the last one wins £20 the rest is donated i do this all the time and works well i have raised loads of money
Another good one is bowling for a bottle.
Place a bottle of whisky at one end of the floor. People take turns to "bowl" (roll) a £1 coin towards the bottle. The nearest coin wins... the rest goes to the charity.

I pressume you are connected to the unit?
Try and get a venue where they can visit.. and let people have a look around.
We did one for the Dorset and Somerset AA and as soon as people knew they would get to look around a heli.. they were all up for it.

Find the worst tracks you can, Rene & Renato, Joe Dolce etc.
Tell them you are going to play a really awful track, but will stop when somebody gives you a £. If nobody does play it right through and tell them it will be back, but next time it's £2.
If you pick the right "music", they will fight to pay you.
Or another idea is a horse racing night.
The local RNLI fundraisers do it down here... v popular and makes a lot of money.
