Hi guys,

Been using my wharfedale EVP rig over the weekend for abit more power and i noticed one of the high pass outputs on the bass bin might be faulty as the sound kept cutting on and off and going crackly out of the top.

There is 1 high pass speakon and then 2 other speakons one for the input and then a spair so i swapped it over and used the other speakon and all seems fine, Maybe it is just the socket on the high pass out or the Crossover is broken,?? I am not sure as it still sounds fine connected this way.

These are the bass bins i use

Is there any other way in connecting up the speakers off one amp if there is a problem as i need to use them at the weekend, maybe run from the amp into the tops and then link the tops into the bass bins then?

Check if any components are loose on the crossover board. I had this issue on NYE, and turned out to be one terminal on a filter was loose. 2 minutes with the soldering iron, job done.

yeah thanks jamie, could running it the way i suggested be ok for the time being?

If it's just linked from the input speakon, then yes. Will just mean you have bass running through your top speakers for now.

Not a problem, should get me through saturday night then i can have a good look at them or maybe take them to a repair shop to be looked at.

What amp are you using Steve? Need to be careful of dropping the ohms too low on that channel.

Well for the wharfedale rig i have always powered it with a KAM KXR2000 never changed it, yes its KAM but always worked with that rig

It runs at 1000w a channel RMS @ 4ohms but i run it at 8 ohms at 675w a channel

Right, you won't be able to use the system as it is for the weekend, as the amp does not work down to 2 ohms and may go into protect. Have you got another amp to use for now, so you can run bass from one, and tops from another?

Don't have another Amp, well when this fault occured i had to do what i suggested to get me by for the night and it sounded fine as i didnt over drive the system, Looks like i am going to have to get to work sorting something out now.

If you can't get it fixed, what you could do is use only 1 sub for the weekend. With the 'good' side wired up as normal, and the other top speaker connected directly to the amplifier.

Yeah i could do that, Having to make a few calls to see if i can get someone to come and have a look at it and make sure they can sort it out lol.

What happened to your Turbosound rig Steve?

djsteve10

That is getting used by a DJ who is working for me that night as he is a club dj and doesnt have his own PA but is doing a under 18's night for me.

Can you not hire him a cheap PA and take out the Turbosound?

djsteve10

Well that did cross my mind but it is expense to go to hire him a cheap Pa, plus he is abit fussy about sound quality too, I am either going to get somebody in i know to have a good look at the sub and get it sorted or just get antoehr amp and a active crossover and run it like that.

If the speakers are yours then what you say goes. i just think he wants the turbosound speakers because they are turbosound and not wharfdale. i have heard the wharfdale speaker, same series as you and i think they sound ok. rather like them tbh.

Hi daz, the only picture i ha ve is of the turbosound that is on that pic i posted a while ago,
They are single 15" bass bins and 12" tops

Yeah i posted it of a medium sized show a while ago, So anyway i went into the garage tonight and dragged out the faulty bass bin and linked into a top and wacked it up to nearly full volume and the sound was still there in the top, No cutting out or nothing,
very strange but say that on that night i was over driving them abit but dont think that would do it

I realy dread opening this can of worms again for the umptythird time, but with 4ohm speakers I wonder how you're running it at 8ohms?
BTW, I have the little sister to your amp. and so far I really like it.

Silly question, but you did get the faulty sub out didn't you? They all tend to look the same.;)

Well i was told when i bought the subs that running the amp at 8ohms into them will be fine,

Also i knew i got the faulty sub out as i took the badge off the handle so i knew which it was ;)

On the KAM Amp i run it with the bridge LED not lit up, is this the correct way of running it into 4 OHMS or do you have to bridge it?

I was partly jesting about the correct sub.;) :D As for impedance, if you have 4ohm subs ( and presumably 4ohm tops ) fed into subs, and into tops from hi out on subs, then you are running at approx 4ohms, and are feeding 1000w RMS per side into two 400w RMS speakers, ( 400 + 400 = 800 :D )which is perfectly acceptable, and in some folks view, ideal.

In your emergency rig, when you put sub and top in parallel by avoiding the crossover, you get two ohms, and I'm not sure the Kam is supposed to be happy with that, though I will check. If you ever have to run it like that again, be very careful, and don't turn the volume up far, as that could be dangerous. ( In worst case scenario, one hopes the protect lights would come on, and you would have to wait for the amp to cool before carrying on )

On the Kam, to use bridge outputs you have to use the binding post terminals, so fear not, you are running correctly, bridging is a quite specialised use. For easy back up, I would recommend a second amp, so you could run subs and tops off one amp each, if needed. Even if you ran fullrange into the subs, that should be fine, without the need for an active crossover.

Yeah thanks for the advice excalibur, put my mind at rest finally, The other thing is the tops are the same model but they are 8ohms, i run out of the high output on the subs, shouldn't be a problem should it?

None whatsoever, perfectly fine. Still a 4ohms system in this configuration.

As a suggestion to spend more of your money, and make life complicated for you:D

Get an active crossover, feed the subs from the 2000, and get a 1500 for the tops. You would still have almost exactly the same power output, probably a nicer sound, a backup amp, and more control of the low/high balance. Also more things to carry, twiddle and plug in!:( Sorry.

Cheers excalibur, going to get an external crossover and run 2 amps, tomorrow i have a 350 guest student ball and i am using the wharfedales as dancefloor enforcers and there is a 8k Turbosound Cluster system installed in Leeds Town hall
