Hi guys,

Just got back from a gig that was an experience to say the least.
I got into the venue tonight around 5:15 to set up the equipment and i took my time and it all went well and got it set up for 7:30 start time, The room was smaller than expected so i didn't bother using the mood lighting what i had thrown into the customer for free, So anyway the person who booked me came storming over midway into the evening "Wheres the mood lighting" so i explained that the layout of the room wasn't the best layout to put the mood lighting in and that i hadn't charged her any extra for it anyway.
So she said "oh ok not a problem but i might aswell just of booked the local Dj" so i said that was entirely upto you and you have booked me and you can't changed it now.
The problem was the room was an L shape and wouldn't look right setting the par cans out and to make matters worse i didnt have enough long power extensions with me to do it.

So things get moving into the night i openend the dancefloor just after the Can Can Cabret dancers,
I went full out for it with the usual opening track Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing
So it remained quiet for a while then i moved into the 80's and got a few more up dancing, then i hit it into the 70's where the floor suddenly got rammed out, the organiser and person who booked me was smiling at me and winked, then i did abit of soul & Tamla Motown and that got the dancefloor full even more, So i took it into the 90's with Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca, At this point everyone was on the dancefloor and i did a few more 90's tracks and then dropped off into Bill Medley & Jenifer Warnes - I've Had The Time Of My life, They all went for that too, It was brilliant, After that i did New York New York which went down well, some pictures to follow soon, I finished the night off on Take That - Never Forget

It was an excellent night but then while i was packing away i nearly made the Manager pass out when i told him how much i charged.

Anyway thats me done with my GigLog im still buzzing sat here at the moment.

Just imagine how upset she'd have been if you were a crap DJ aswell.........the full dancefloor you had is what's important, good work Steve! :)

Wish this could have happened to me last night at a rural golf club here in Stoke - my evening was just a little boring. Client was so lovely though and the venue great. Just 36 people altogether and the bar-staff didn't exactly have to break out into a sweat.

Start at 8pm and played till midnight. Leisurely setup from about 6.45pm and 7.30 client still hadn't arrived. Manager asked if I had her number and he rang her - she was on way, just taxi late in arriving. Promptly arrived at 8pm, put balloons, etc on table, paid me and got on with socialising.

I just had no-one dance until around 10.30pm when a couple got onto the floor to some 80s stuff and only stopped when someone got their drinks for them - so I just had an evening trawling through my collection, keeping it going. One chap asked for some Motown/Northern, of which I played a good handful to which he thanked me as I played some he'd not heard for ages.

Eventually, like 11.30pm, the bar closed and everyone suddenly appeared on the dancefloor for a mad 30 minutes and manager said 'keep going till about 12.30, which I did. Kinda broke the boredom for me and got a massive cheer and thanks from everyone.

Client very grateful and booked me for her daughter's birthday bash at her house in summer and it was so funny as she set her elderly father on to help me load and pack up and he seemed happy to do it as he was on the wagon due to volunteering to drive everyone home after. Decent chap too.

When asked for Northern what do you play?
Mine normally consist of at least few, or all of these if it's going well:

R Dean Taylor - There's a Ghost in my House
Frank Wilson - Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)
Doby Gray - On The Floor
Earl Van Dyke - 6 by 6
JJ Barnes - Our Love is in the Pocket

Just wondered if there's anything else that works for you?

Hope I'm ok at least :) - and most of my work is repeat or recommendation bookings so I must be doing something right! Get the occasional cold enquiry that I get work from but I also have a lot of work from a venue I've semi-residented at (plus store my gear at) for what must well over 4+ years now. Do get a nice amount of business now via the web too, though often it's going the job, via email, of the 'ring round for a cheapy' instead of the phone.

As for the Northern - yup - you can include those and Al Wilson plus Elgins, Doris Troy, Wayne Gibson, etc. I don't really have a set list that I play as I've loads of tracks - just really play what jumps out at me. Left to me, I'd play it all night - and have done Motown/Northern parties too.
