Which Lighting Would You Go For?

If you had a budget between 500 and a grand, which is your preferred make of lighting, model and why?

I particularly like Abstract, they look good and they are priced fairly.

ACME are nice too, though I do believe their casings are made of aluminium were as the likes of Martin and Abstract, made out of steel.

Maybe a mod can set up some kinnda voting box to see which is the favourite :D :cool:

Advantage of aluminium is they are pretty light though. Never had a case break on me with mine. To be honest motor is more likely to go than the case is on any light.

I think most lights you are paying for the name. Hence why the ssc-2 from maplin costs £79.99 and the same light from chavaut or american DJ costs nearly £200

Your paying for the name because I think they are well established. I cant fault Martin's stuff at all, good all round quality, wish they were cheaper.

Have you seen Martin's new range of moving heads Darren? Only 150 watts and retailing them around £1,200 :eek:

Whatever you buy, you're paying for the name...

But with that name you'd usually expect a superior product in features, reliability, good backup etc. else no-one would buy the more expensive products, would they?

And why does this poll have obscure brands like Griven, Showtec and Eurolite, but no EVL?? (Never mind.. I added them :D)

I don't have any Martin lighting but have roadied for a touring company who use it and I would have to say that the optics are better than alot of the cheaper stuff - the images seem crisper, brighter and just more professional looking.

That said if acme/chauvet/abstract etc. are well DMX'd then you can get some spectacular results.

My 'Shiva 250R' discharge scanners retail at about £350 each are made by GENI and are awsome although most people would write off GENI because of the Maplins link and their budget range.

Lighting in general is definately getting better. :)

Not really.. they used to be MAD (I think)... I've had EVL Spins for about 3 years now and they attend all of the major DJ shows.

Ahh yeah, but LFX are a seperate company from EVL, they just sell similar products.. and now American DJ are importing the same products again, just to confuse things even more!

I think MAD sold the brand "MAD" to Abstract and then renamed themselves, but I could be wrong...

Some of the Abstract guys went on to form Mad, and some to EVL and then onto LFX. Something like that anyway...

Splash in the ocean! I'd say 700 - 800 quid for a mixer is really expensive, though it depends what kinnda mixer whether it be a powered mixer or standard mixer.

Starlight i'd have to disagree with you on the company martin light.
They are expensive because their lights are presented in the highest quality and they are a trusted world wide company for professional show lighting, its just a shame they don't make lights for typical mobile dj's price range, which is the downside.

I voted skytec (thinking of skytronic) because there is a light that amazed me (and i still remember to this day) by skytronic called the 'big centre light' (http://www.skytronic.co.uk/product/product.php?s=152.603) when i was only about 5 years old! I just remember being fasinated by all the colours and patterns and how the mirrors all moved lol!

A few years back, I had a Denon DN1800F CD player. Comparing it to the KAM or Numark players I'd used before, I could only see one major difference...the price!

I've never had the budget to try Martin, but over the years have tried lots of alternatives. The lights I use on my rigs today that I consider to be totally dependable are:

> Acme Stormbird - good sound-to-light effect; optics a bit wishy-washy
> Acme Dynamos (100W) - good workhorses; nice effect; reasonable optics
> Acme Dynarolls (2x250W) - my favourite all-round effect
> NJD Datamoon (250W) - versatile, built like tanks, nice range of effects

I run a variety of other effects by different manufacturers but these are the ones that I can throw in and out of the van and never worry about them letting me down.

Love my Acme stuff - have the Smart Gobos which do for most jobs - though wish they were 250w, the Excercets which are, well, ok for kids parties and my Leos and Scimitars which are top notch.

(Could I modify the Smart Gobos to be 250w? Anyone?)

Indeed, a lot of our stuff is ACME & we've had no problems. Which is more than can be said for our Abstract or Source / Zoom stuff.

That said we've never had any problems with our Martin stuff either, but the poll wasn't Multiple choice

For the money, they are unbelieveable value. Along with the legendary Abstract Twister 4s, they will always remain in my lighting setup - whereas other lighting units have been and gone (either broken, or sold on).

Well, one thing that immediately springs to mind, is that Denons are the only players within that price range that have 'true' instant start - every single time, no fail. I think you'd only notice this if you mix in a certain way, and I often drop tracks in bang on the beat, so it is very important.

The Denon gear is the best stuff ive ever used. I wouldnt swap it for any other make. I have noticed the quality.

As for lighting fx..... Abstract/Martin get my vote.

Robe kit is pretty good. I have the pleasure of occasionally using the 700 and 1200 series moving heads and they are very powerful with sharp optics. The casing is a lot thinner than on the Macs, but they still seem to stand up pretty well to life on the road.

I voted for Martin.

Would have been PR if they were on the list seeing as I user their moving heads.
However if were getting more heads I would now go for Martin - hence the vote.
I also work with Martin heads at work.

Robe is catching up in the technical world though.. prefered by quite a few shows to Martins now!
