My RCF sub has a powercon rather than a normal power lead and I'm wondering why all manufacturers don't use them?

They seem to be a much better idea then IECs as they can't get accidently knocked out.

Anyone use them on anything else?

I have a powercon input on my db sub 15 but then again these subs are basically the same.

i think there better to have anyway. bit like using a speakon instead of 1/4 jack for passive speakers.

They just look like Speakons for power, rather than audio signals.

My DAS sub 18s used to have powercons but my JBL PRX18s are IEC, I agree that they are a better connection, my JBL mains did get pulled out once by a pizzed up woman coming behind for a request, however, now I have shortened them so they don't trail about the floor so its better. I also had a console till recently that was internally wired with a powercon chassis socket which was good, not got round to doing my new console yet though.

My DB sub uses them as well. Much more heavy duty than iec and as you said cannot be pulled out.

OK, i dont want to hijack tis thread but i think i have a valid question regarding powercon and iec.

IS it possible to power the tops from the sub. On the db sub 15 it has a powercon output so you can link up more than one subwoofer.

Could ie be possible to have powercon at one end and iec at the other end so really all you need to power the speakers on one side is one plug?


I thought that powercon were industry standard now anyway???

Ahh ok. Would be nice if a eletrical engineer was here to confirm this. Just to check.

I only have the one sub atm so its not a problem for me but when i do get another sub i would need to do this. Plus i think other member might want to know as well. :confused:

Yes you can the db manual says it is used for passthrough power for when using either powered tops or more than 1 sub.

Looks like im going to make some new cables soon. :D. just bee to but the connections as i have the cable already. but the powercon connector has to be white/grey. well on my sub its white/grey for the output anyway.

I use a powercon on my mixer flightcase. I chose this type of connection as its on the back of my mixer case and an IEC would be too tempting for someone to pull out at a gig

Guy's I bought a display Model RCF 705as from a Music shop in Swansea yesterday - got a great price on it, only problem was it didnt come with a POWERCON lead..... they said they would be able to get on by the end of the day and them by this morning but im still waiting and tonight is fastly approaching.

Is it possible to make them?

Yes it is. and its quite easy to do.

Ive made all of mine and theyve passed the PAT.

If your not sure bout your own skills, I can make you one up at cost of a connector (i have cables and 3 pin plugs) :)

Could I do it with a 13 amp plug/fuse, and an old speakon lead / Nutrick connector?

or even a kettle lead with a new connector?

Kettle lead with new connector. Take the IEC off it and open up the Powercon. Inside you have 3 connections, Neutral, Live and Earth...and to make it easy they are all marked up. Just connect the wires into the correct place and close the outer casing around it.

Im probably not explaining very well, it will all become appparant when you get the connector :)

Not only that but the locating lugs are positioned differently to ensure that you cannot get the 2 mixed up :)

Just make sure you have a spare powercon lead in the old lead box, we all carry loads of IEC leads 'just in case'.

Yep blue power in White power out ,lots of amps and pro lighting now have them now,also you can now get a locking iec connector QSC use them on there speakers.

Curiously enough, Neutrik debuted the Powercon True 1 at NAMM this year in the USA.

It doesn't seem to be featured in their product section on the website so I don't know when it'll be released in the UK, but it improves upon the original design in several key areas.

The True 1 offers male / female gender chassis mount and cable connectors, which means no longer having to spec to length or extend via one of the NAC3MM coupler boxes, they can just be linked inline. Last time I checked they were about £15.00 ea, and tended to grow legs and go walkies...

Similar small form-factor and D Type chassis fittings, rated for breaking capacity and so can be disconnected under load, offer class IP65 when mated. I'm of the opinion they have really hit the button this time! I'd love if they went one further and made up a kind of Lewden 'T Line' type splitter. Where space and presentation is a factor, I'd be happy paying the extra few pound over the bulk of a 16a connector.

I will be taking a special interest in their stand @ PLASA this year. We'd be looking to standardize our racks / truss PDU's and hard power lighting to the new True 1 system, leaving only the heavier mains < 16a terminated to ceeform. I'd like to see manufacturers follow suit and do away with IEC / Volex / Powercon altogether once they hit the market. Certainly something to think about!

I have two main flight cases for my playout equipment and in each I have an extension lead which is connected to a powercon connector, I then have the other half of the powercon connected to a lead with a 13amp plug on it, then I simply plug in to the side of the flightcase...and the I have power :D

For my mobile amp racks I have powercons in and out. For my bigger amp racks I have 32a ceeform in and out. And all of my powered speakers use Volex locking iec connectors, and locking iec connectors on my qsc amps.

So a bit of everything.

It is at knee level too which is not good even though I have bought a 90 degree one.

That sub is great (even if it is called dave)!

Not sure if its because its on the big flight case (enhancing it somehow)?
I did not expect it too be so good. Really throws out an acceptable frequency.
I knocked six glasses off a wall at the weekend (15 meters away) :D

I think for the money its excellent considering it powers my RCF tops too.
I have run it in all sorts of venues.

I am looking for a Fohhn or HK unit at some point, but I like it so much I am getting a 10 inch version too for reinforcement and instant back up.

My HK Actor's came with Powercon, and 4 cables. I then bought some white 'outs' and made up the link leads, so now have 2 'ins' and 2 link leads.

They are rock solid, but do worry me as someone (including me) could easily kick one walking behind the speakers, you are then ferked for the rest of the night !

I must make up some spares, as someone pointed out earlier, we all carry spare IEC's, but how many of us have spare powercons ? especially at those prices !!
