View Full Version : Lasers - Kam Vs Prolight

I am looking at a couple of lasers at the moment and they aren't the normal must have smoke type, but more about what is being projected into the room.
At Clive's show, I saw both these products and remember thinking one was far better then the other. I've looked at vids of both and am undecided which one is better. In real life one definately was better than the other. I think Corabar Steve and I agreed on which one was better.....but I can't remember.
The two choices are:
Kam DMX Star Cluster 140 and
Prolight Equinox Nebula
Anyone else seen either in the flesh, so to speak?

theres a person on youtube called ellaskins (http://www.youtube.com/ellaskins), he was the first person to have the kam star cluster in the UK, you could ask him for some info.

please bare in mind i'm just going on watching a few videos on these on youtube but my opinion is i prefer the kam laser , seems a bit more versatile and uniformed in what it does if that makes sense?
the prolight to me looks like a busy episode of most haunted.
I would have to go and have a play but on loking at videos alone i'd be going to look at the kam version first. plus I do think the equinox looks abit toyish in its appearence.

The kam cluster is awesome!!!
Fills the room with lights all over. A laser you get some use out of even when fog/haze is banned. A great effect for the money. Very pleased I bought one.

Normal lasers are a totally different effect.
But that's one of the deciding factors really. It depends what effect you want and if you get to use fog/haze at the venues you work at. With the venues and events I generally do, fog/haze is usually a no no so I was looking for a different type of effect, which is what the Star Cluster is - yes it looks fantastic with haze in the room but, unlike single beam lazers, you get a great effect without.
You've got to think of the Star Cluster as a 'different' type of effect and it can't be compared to 'normal' lazers.
IMHO: It's a good effect and well worth the price.

I got a demo of the Kam cluster when i picked up my REVO3 from PSL over in Liverpool.
Very impressed, a very good effect like fireworks/ fireflys looked especialy good with no haze or smoke effects.
Possibly next on the shopping list.

To be honest the Prolight looked slightly better on the day, I think it may have been because that area was slightly darker and out of the two on the day the area for the Prolight was a little more dedicated and more focused , so on reflection I think they are both equally as good, I think I will go for the KAM :D

I presume that because there are so many beams, that they wouldn't do any damage. They must have thought about that otherwise they couldn't put them on sale if they were unsafe surely?

We just bought a KAM cluster 140 - absolutely brilliant effect on the floor BUT when we looked into the laser rules we got nervous and have chickened out of using it on the floor where it could go in people's eyes. So far we have shone it on walls and ceilings (still looks really cool but not as good as on the floor) to avoid putting it in people's eyes.
We also wondered if there are so many beams each one is actually safe as they are possibly low power - plus why would they sell them and (sort of) advertise them as complete room lights if they could run the risk of bad publicity or being sued. If anyone has any advice that says it is OK to use on the floor would really appreciate it but for now we're playing it safe.

Since I bought the Kam Cluster I have only used it aiming above people's heads. There are so many beams that you get the whole room filled anyway so I don't see any need to aim the unit down. The advice is to have a laser about 3m high - although that is not always possible or practicle in a lot of smaller venues.
However, at just over 2m hight and aiming above head hieght I get great feedback about it. Just last Sat doing a wedding in a massive hall at Harlaxton Manor (nr Grantham) the people were admiring the lights - mostly the Cluster.
I aim my other lights at the floor and walls and let the cluster do the rest of the room and it seems to work brilliantly.
I think also whilst as Darren, i think, says it might well be safe... but many of the 'audience' will not know that and see a lazer.. pointing into the crowd.. and pressume the world.... maybe leading to a bad reputation and not as many repeat bookings?
My 2p worth anyway..
personally I always Like lazers going above the heads. Just think it looks cool :)

You really think people wouldn't book you because of a light pointing on the dance floor?

It was just an idea Darren.
And yes I think there is a chance.. people see lazers as being dangerous.. so maybe they wouldn't like it.

I agree to that comment - I think the people who admire the light show since I got the Cluster do not think "laser" - I think they are just pleasantly surprised (wowed!) by the sheer amount of lights coming out of that small box.
Unlike a 'standard' laser with one or two direct laser beams aiming across the room - then they know it's a laser.

Interesting feedback, thanks. I agree that the cluster looks really good on walls or ceilings and it is the one light that has got the most favourable comments in a short time.
However, when the floor is empty at the start shining the cluster across it looks really great - but so far we have adhered to the 2 - 3M above heads rule and will keep doing that and just put a couple of gobos across the floor. I guess when the floor filled we would lose the effect anyway.
As said earlier it's not just the legal bit but also the danger to reputation and hassle. (And at weddings, kids do seem to love standing with the lights in their eyes.....perhaps we could charge a bit extra for cataract corrections?)
Do sometimes wonder if we should issue dark glasses, ear plugs and body protection when people arrive due to bright lights, loud music and the danger of bumping into someone on the dance floor.
Be interesting to hear KAM's comments when they arrive as if anything went wrong presumably the lawsuits could extend beyond the DJ and back to them.
Having said all this - even keeping them shining high the KAM is well worth the money in my opinion - looks really classy.

I've looked at a couple of videos of the PROLIGHT nebula and it is very similar to the KAM cluster. I was at my cousin's 18th birthday party last weekend (not asked to do the disco 'cos there were three birthday boys/girl plus I needed a night aff!) and was AMAZED by the KAM star cluster the disco had.
SO much so I had to go up and ask him what it was!
Not knowing what it was (he was very vague, just boasting about how much it cost (which if he paid that for it he was done big time! hee hee :D )) I did a bit searching and have had it on my shoppiing list since Monday!
Now you've gone and thrown me by telling me about the Prolight Nebula!
Still, I guess it'll be the KAM, as I've seen that in the flesh and I literally went 'WOW!!' :D

I got my cluster for £199 and the nebula is £189. The nebula is a better laser no doubt about it but as I already had a kam one I was in two minds if its worth selling the cluster and paying extra for the nebula which I have decided to do.
The cluster is a box shaped light so therefore wider than the nebula but the nebula is slighty longer, either way both are quite small units.

We use 2 Star Cluster 3Ds as master/slave, and now point at least one of them towards dancefloor which gives an excellent room filling effect. Nebula also looks good but we prefered having two seperate laser apertures as from the dancefloor it looks like 2 lights (1 red, 1 green), compared to the one aperture on the Nebula, so looks like you've got more lights. An excellent light which is why we now have two.

When you say towards the dancefloor do you mean pointing DOWN towards the dancefloor?
Reason I ask is these lasers have the ability to cause damage to peoples eyes and as such you should have them facing upwards of 3metere off the ground.

Do we know if we can point these at the dancefloor yet???
If we can i'll be getting one very soon but if not i'll probably leave it.
Please can someone tell me either way I'm confused (again:confused:).

Most 'experts' say diffraction lasers aren't powerful enough by their very nature or in one place long enough to worry about it.
Personally, I have kept mine on the ceiling and pointing up.

I can see where everyone is coming from with regards to lasers, however if superclubs (Syndicate in Blackpook springs to mind as i was there last week), and big dance events (Weekend festivals at Pontins etc) all use high powered "normal" lasers that scan the crowd with no hesitation at all.....

I must admit i agree. I was at one of the biggest clubs in Newquay last weekend and they had a powerful multi coloured laser bouncing off a huge mirror ball into the crowd:eek:

I have the Nebula too, and i think it's fantastic! I've got a couple of gigs coming up, both of which are in the same venue - which is a huge village hall. Will be interesting to see the nebula on the cieling there as i haven't gigged with it yet.

In all fairness I rather not risk it. I dont think they would slap a warning on a product if there was no chance of it doing damage.

Well even if the risk was 0.01% they'd still whack one on to cover themselves. I would if i was a manufacturer.

Because it can blind someone. Imagine the lawsuit. As a DJ I'd take the same standpoint.
I doubt putting this into T&C's would exempt you either?

Well the big company lighting jock i spoke to laughed when i got to speak to him at the Atomik Weekender. He pointed out that it was not a fixed beam and was constantkly moving so its fine......
Im guessing that this guy know what he was alking about, seen as the lasers were 3000mW moving head lasers

Yeah Im not doubting that may be the case Steve and I'd admit hes more knowledgeable on it than I am. In all fairness I much prefer the gobos (or dots) on the floor and having the laser on the ceiling or in tall rooms above head heights.
Ive often wondered if you can shine this into a mirror ball in the middle of the room if that is ok? Im guessing it doesnt make any difference to the strength of the beam

What makes you think that just because these guys press a few buttons and programme DMX that they know the dangers of these products? Are they scientists?

No, but im guessing that the companies that supply said sound and lighting and look after the affairs of the superclubs have risk assessed them to death and decided that its a minimal risk, or they wouldnt be designed or set up to hit the crowd? :)

The people that do the risk assessments are not the people who operate the equipment though are they?

I see where your coming from Daz but im guessing that you expect your employees to stick to your risk assessment, and if they dont its a warning and/or the sack.
This will (hopefully) be the same policy for the bigh hire companies.
Ive been to quite a few super clubs (Syndicate, Crasher, Cream, etc), and a few dance weekends/festivals and the laser always scans the crowd. If it was one in a blue moon then fair enough, its a over-eager LJ/employee, but in every event/club....someone must have decided its safe to do.
I am looking at a couple of lasers at the moment and they aren't the normal must have smoke type, but more about what is being projected into the room.
Can you explain that a bit more, all the lasers I have seen project a beam of light that until it hits a surface are invisible to the naked eye, hence why smoke shows the beams and makes a great effect.
Is this a laser that is visible without the need for smoke or are we still saying it needs to hit a surface???

There's probably a link or two in this thread to explain what I meant.
Didn't Ollie put a video up?
