Only really had a good play on the DJM 1000, and as with all Pioneer mixers, they are awesome in both build and sound quality.

Within that price bracket, I'd personally go for a Korg Zero 8, but more for production use and live remixing with Ableton, so probably not really what your looking for.

The Vestax one does not feel like a £1000 mixer to be honest, and only being 3 channels and no midi lets it down. However the filters sound nice.

I'm a big fan of Pioneer...personally I use the DJM3000 which is a fairly new 19inch/5U model with all the toys and effects but all the Pioneers I have ever used have been nice...not saying there's anything wrong with the rest, just my preference.

Flatliners Having used a allen & Heath for 2 years and never had the meters in the yellow and ran the system loud.£1000 on a mixer is not that much as it is the heart of the audio system.

To be honest if you set a Denon mixer up properly as in set the gain just past 12 oclock and the channel faders at full it will sound just as good as a Allen & Heath Mixer.

It is all about how you set up your mixer too rather than splashing out aload of cash on a mixer.

i agree with you there steve.

bit off topic but its like giving a beginer drummer a massive ott drum kit. it wont make them play any better, maby look stupid but the same thing applys to dj's.

If you cant set up your gear correctly then it will sound naff what ever make it is.

I don't see how not going into the red makes it a good mixer.

It's a pre-amplifier (input gain, channel gain and master) - amplifying an already distorted line-level signal is bad.

I once saw a DJ who has an Ecler SCALT 8 Mixer, same as what i have at the moment, and he had his gains 3 quarters of the way around and the faders were up at probably a quarter of the way, To be honest it sounded absolutley shocking, Distorted to hell and there was no clairty to it, After a few words i set it up the way i have been taught and it sounded 100% better,
It all comes down to the gear operator, know how to use it properly and you will get the best from it!

I went from a Pioneer DJM 500 to an Allen & Heath Xone3d and I must say the difference in quality was amazing, it was like having a whole new sound system.

So I would say yes a good mixer can make a huge difference.

Ok.. well say both the Denon user and the Allen & Heath user knew how to set it up properly, are you saying there still wouldn't be any difference?

Yes, you can make a high quality mixer sound crap, but you can't make a lower quality one sound any better than its components and build allow.

My Allen & Heath Xone3d cost £1400 and its used for mobiles and in my opinion was worth every penny.

You could look at it another way, with all the moving about that a mixer takes on mobiles the better the build quality the more reliable it should be.

I have had various mixers over the years and gone through most of them over time. One thing I will say about the Allen & Heath mixers and Pioneer is that if you do manage to break one they can be repaired.

Unlike cheaper mixers which most place wont bother trying to fix.

I think you will find that they are now built in China, but spares are readily available from A&H UK. Allen & Heaths service dept is in the Uk and in terms of customer support is second to none

what's so great about that Rane, Shaun?

it doesn't look like there are any channel gain pots
also very short channel faders :(

sure, Rane gear has a nice solid feel about it, but that particular model doesn't look particularly exciting, unless I'm missing something?

give me a CXM or a Formula Sound instead any day.
