Hi, my name is pamela. Just jumped on this band wagon. Was introduced to the website from a willy waving friend of mine haha...... Currently only done a few small gigs at the moment but hoping to get the confidence to get some gear and get the ball rolling pretty soon. The thing i fear most is the micraphone.......ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Practising with the hairbrush in the mirror is not helping at all. Anyone give me some pointers please??x ;)

Keep practising at home speaking out loud saying things to people who are not there (best not to do this in public!) and get used to that sound of your own voice coming through a pa system. When you have to do it for real: if you are nervous just concentrate on one person in the audience and pretend you are speaking just to them. Forget that there maybe a hundred or more others. Be yourself and speak normally and clearly. Breathe. Hold your head up and speak out so that what you are saying is projected.

This is a tricky one. I had the same problem when i started DJing. I found that you just can't practice for this how ever you try it. if your really that nervous don't look directly at the crowd that's what i done until you get the confidence.

The best tip i can give you is Loud And Clear. i used to rush what i was saying and had the mic on low but this just lead to confusion as no one knew what i was saying.

Just keep trying and you'll get used to it.

Thanx for the tips folks. Will take them on board and see if they do me any good. Public speaking is not my favourite task.....my nerves always get the better of me. Will give it a bash though x

You sound as if you could be a naughty girl if you wanted to be, and if you do a good job, the small gigs you are doing right now could lead to you getting a big one someday.

As for the use of a Mike, just remember - the punters are usually too far gone to work out how you are feeling inside, and if you are not confident enough when stone cold sober....:guinness:

I can be a very naughty girl. When i get behind the decks i change into a different person. I have only done about two or three gigs so far. The things that is stopping me is my mike work as i am too nervous to speak.:mad: I hate my voice it's not very "DJish" either. I dont have that, "Sream if you wanna go faster tone". Maybe i am just not meant to be. I love it though and want to do it. x

Thank goodness for that! A DJish voice raises pictures of Peter Kaye. Just be yourself, it's the best you can be.

Once you lose the nerves you will sound OK and normal.

Every DJ sounds different and i think most people have to "put it on". It not a natural sounding voice. You'll just have to play around and find a voice that suits you:).

Hi Pamela.
Please don't let Microphone issues frighten you or put you off the fun of DJing. I would bet there are loads of DJs on here that are always nervous at the start of every gig... Me included. Until that first announcement and until you've filled the dance floor for the first time there is always a nervous period.

Also, like others have said - nobody is too bothered about what the DJ sounds like - as long as you can be heard and clearly! The one thing that everyone would notice is if they can't hear you or if you're not clear.

Voice not very 'DJish'... What's that then? I can sing my '@ss' off with oodles of confidence but when it comes to talking I think I sound crap and my confidence goes with it but it doesn't stop me - (a) it's part of the job and (b) nobody has ever come over and said I don't 'sound' like a DJ..!!!

So, Pamela, has anyone ever told you that you don't have the right voice? No? I guessed not - so don't worry about it. I bet you've heard plenty of DJs that don't have a 'typical' DJ voice.

Your presentation, music variety, and ocasional announcement will carry you forward and the more confident you get with the whole package, the more confident you'll become with the mic. One thing that I find always eases the nerves is meeting the guests. The more faces you can talk to and get their names, the more relaxed you'll be when facing them with a mic in your hand.

enjoy your stay mic technique comes with time don't worry concentrate on playing the right music first and foremost ...... i wouldn,t say boo to a goose when i first started, despite being a public speaker at school then i went through about 3 months of over doing it (people telling me to shut up and play the song etc) then found a happy medium and one of the things im now complimented on is my mic work , judgeing what is needed correctly from quite alot at say a store promotion to keeping quiet if a low key wedding is requested.

as I said enjoy the forum.
