My new setup...thoughts?

Here is my idea for my new setup…let me know your thoughts


2ft minimax stand
Overhead bar – 1 Monitor, 2 impossibleds
KAM 1300 LED light screen at front
New speaker system – not sure which one yet…speaker meet will make me decide
1 flightcase with Denon X050 mixer, Kam mic mixer and lapto running OTSDJ

Optional 6 LED par cans
Abstract VRX colours (once I pick them up from Jeff)
Maybe 2 moving heads

I’ve decided this because I want ease and quickness of setup, plus most venues I do are not huge and don’t need a huge show…if I have to, I will still have my 4ft stand with starcloth with EVL spins, Abstract XP5s, etc.

What do you think? Am I wasting money on the KAM screen? Should I stay 4ft and get S&H booth? etc

I wouldn't bother with the screen. Even if you are using the micromax stand - buy an S&H booth and everything will fit neatly behind Mark.

I can't honestly see why you'd want the X050 for Djing - there can't be that much difference in weight between that and a DN-X500 for example. I looked at the X050 for quiz nights but what put me off was the lack of eq on the mic.

Also, as good as they impossibleds are, using just 2 isn't going to give you a great deal of variety, though the punters probably won't notice that.

You're absolutely right, the punters wont notice. I think many DJ's get too tied up in thinking that they need tons of different types of effects (I used to be one of them), but in reality the majority of punters just don't care. I've used nothing more than 2 impossibleds for lighting on numerous occasions....and still ended up with great comments on my feedback form regarding the lighting. My main lighting set-up now consists of nothing more than 2 impossibleds and 4 moving heads, the only time I take out more lighting is if it's a younger crowd. The set-up time has gone from 60-90 minutes down to less than 30. Work smarter not harder.

The funny thing is, I've had more positive comments on how nice, neat and compact my set-up looks now, than I ever had in the past when using tons of lighting.

I want an X050 because my case is a roadready 3U x 11U

In the 3U - 1 KAM wireless mic set
in the 11U - 1 2U X050 mixer (only need 2 channels for OTS and Kam mixer)
1 1U Kam mic mixer
1 8U blanking plate for laptop to sit on

The trouble with the S&H booth is that they are very wide, and if I get that, I might as well keep my 4ft stand, but then there are a lot of places I do regularly which I woul;dn't fit it in. I want both really...Kam lightscreen for normal discos, S&H booth for weddings!

I think maybe 2 impossibleds and 2 moving heads then? the moving heads on stands elsewhere

There's always the case that when you are providing a 'Disco' that you have to go over the top and take everything you can have lights all over the place etc etc.. We all learn as we are going along and everything is a learning curve. I try out various set ups now and then. My speakers and amps and players mostly stay the same but it's the lights I tend to try and muckabout with. The other week I didn't even bother taking the T-bars for the top of my goalpost stand and put 2 x LittLED's on the floor behind me so they projected the beams either side of me and up at the ceiling and then the LED Boogie and MarvelLED on each speaker stack pointing down at the floor. I was on a stage too so it was better and I really liked it. I have the Dynarocks too and sometimes they get lost in with the LED's so sometimes I don't bother with them.

My set up times have gone down too. I have boxes for each bunch of equipment.
For example : One box has all my extension leads in and gaffer tapes. One box has all my G-Clamps and any connectors and another has all my IEC leads etc.

I used to take all the boxes with me and pick and choose what I needed from the van and it seemed like a big waste of time and space. Now what I do is take enough out of each box of what I need for each function including some backups. That way all the boxes stay in the lockup and I have everything I need. I bought one of those collapsable crates on wheels from Staples which is really handy. I put everything in there along with my light switch box, fans and light (so I can see what I am doing) and I am away. When I finish I put everything back in it's allocated box and collapse the crate and everything is coolio!

I also try to leave the G-Clamps on the lights where possible so that saves time too. It saves me so much time. The goalpost stand is always left fixed togeather too to save more time so unless the venue is miles away and a long walk with the trolly, it doesn't take me long at all now.
