Mixer Issues

Hi Guys,

Really hoping you could help me out as you've always given me good advice in the past (Creep...creep!).

I've got a gig on Friday and have now my mixer's on the blink. Usually of course I'd have a backup but I recently sold a load of stuff to fund my CDJ-400's and now I need a cheap 'make-shift' mixer for Friday.

I really only need a two-channel (+Mic) affair and have always been happy using my Numark DM950 (cheap as chips but did the job!). Do you think I should just get another 950 or is there a similar (maybe slightly more expensive) unit anyone would recommend?

Finally, in case I can fix the problem with my current one, the issue is distortion on base notes. I've tried missing the mixer out and running a CDJ400 straight to my mackies and the sound's beautiful. As soon as I stick the mixer in line it distorts under heavy bass (I think it maybe a power issue)...any ideas?

P.S - Isn't it always the way that there's always something that could do with an upgrade? I've gone from Skyt**h to Mackie for my speakers and Kam's to CDJ's for my Decks and now my Mixer's the weak link....no wonder I'm skint!

Hi There,

Just wondering if you have checked the Phono/Line level switch (if it has one)? This can cause a lot of distortion in the lower end of things, and is easily rectified with the flick of a switch, or in some cases plugging the inputs into the line input instead of the phono!

Thanks for the reply. Now, please correct me if I'm wrong (it certainly wouldn't be the first time!) but I presume CD decks go into the line inputs (obviously 'traditional' decks will go into phono inputs).

I've only just converted to the CDJ-400's as I'm used to being a PC-Dj so maybe I'm missing something!

I'm not one for complex mixers, as long as they have a basic eq I've never really felt the need for anything else (what am I missing out on guys?)

This is the really silly obvious answer, but I presume you have tried removing the bass on the EQ? The usual start point is to have all eq flat ( no cut, no boost) and add or remove till happy.
