What is an OK mileage to buy a van at?

I know they run longer than most cars and have a lot more mileage on them, but I'm slightly worried about buying anything with more than say 75K on the clock.

75K isn't alot at all for a deisel.. my transit had 150k+ which was still fairly low for its age (N Reg)

I agree with Dan. 75k isn't high for a deisel. Mine had about 73K on the clock when I bought it.

75k isn't high for any modern vehicle really.

Engines,and general engineering, as well as lubrication is so much better today than, say, 25 years ago, that most cars and vans have a life of twice that mileage whether diesel of petrol.

Remember a car that only does 4k miles per year will have been driven around town mostly with lots of steering manouevres at low speed and perhaps time in traffic jams adn lots of stop/start, on/off short journeys (remember the castrol add - most engine wear occurs in the first 5 minutes an engine is on, or similar).

Bought my S-reg diesel Partner about 18 months ago with 78k on the clock. So far it's needed a patch on the (original) exhaust, a track rod end adjustment (crappy IoW roads :rolleyes: ), a new tyre and a new battery. Otherwise it's been absolutely fine.

As it's already been said vehicles are designed to do much higher mileages than before. If the van has a bit of history ie servicing, old MOT's and generaly looks ok then can't see the problem.


As an example (yes, I know it's a car;) ) I got my Audi A3 2 yrs ago, it's on an 02 plate at the time it had done 134k with full service history, it now has 172k on it and still sails through MOT's gets an oil change every 6 or so k and no problems with it.

Oh and it's not a diesel either, it's a 1.8 petrol turbo with 225 wild horses :D

I agree with above post. Service history is a big bonus, especially on a diesel - make sure the oil has been changed regularly (at least every 6 months). I have a car (Escort 1.8 Diesel Estate) and it has 108,000 and still runs fine. It's just had a service and had 1 wheel bearing replaced and 2 tyres, not bad really.

I agree mileage is not the problem for most diesel vans it's age and body rust that destroys them mostly.

Mileage matters very little. Service history is paramount, but beware! Just because the book is stamped, doesn't mean the work has been carried out well/at all! ;) :eek:
