Help needed *21st Birthday*

Hey guys, many of you have helped me before, with my rig and bussiness cards etc, and this may sound strange but bussiness has picked up .. A LOT.

I had a call tonight from a woman who lives local, and she found me in the yellow pages. Anyway to cut a long story short she has booked me for two parties a "40th" no problem but HER SONS 21ST!! My mum said thats a reli important birthday so i need to get it right,

if you have any playlist or song ideas for the 21st and the 40th and what gear i need to take then please help me, as I need it !!!

She is paying me 200 for both nights, cheep i know but like you guys said I need the experiance :D

Personnally I normally find the 21st are easier than 40th's. For the 21st you have age on your side and I normally find playing the latest tracks and clubland goes down well with most 21st.
I find 40th's a bit harder as the age range is normally greater (the whole family go) so you need to play a wide variety of music. For 40th's I normally spend most the night playing 70's and 80's.

I know it is often frowned upon amongst dj's but I always add a few cheesy songs which always goes down well !!

By the way £200 for the gigs is quite respectable for starting off and your age - well done !!

I would suggest a lot of modern stuff and alot of cheese, eg. Dj Casper, Whigfield, Macarena etc. Make sure you also play Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 at some point. Always goes down a storm at 21sts

don't worry about lights too much - defo not worth trying to hire. Sure what you have will be ok. If really rough place a stage is handy if available. I have worked in supposed rough places and touch wood had little bother. My advise is if you see any trouble starting turn the hall lights on and turn your music down for 10 mins. this usually sorts it. I take it your dad will be with you ??

I would imagine he, or another responsible adult, will need to be, as Charlie would not AFAIK be able to get PLI in his own name, as a minor.

Not so much down but drop the tempo. a couple of slower tracks can sooth the savage etc.

And while you're into Bryan Adams & Bon Jovi don't forget a bit of Queen.

But check the 21st, it could be another family do, not just friends.

Ask what type of music there into , for 40th play loads of 80s , 21st dance , chart , cheese as said living on a prayer / dont stop me now / 500 miles etc. Most of all enjoy yourself i always think you enjoy yourself the guests will as well.

Well a) i dont have insurance, I need to get it and look into it, but just havnt got round to it, how important is it,

Yes, but as we all know, it is not a legal requirement, but good practise, especially in this day and age.

Just make sure you ask what music they want.. if you're not sure.

In my opinion if you are under 18 you should have an adult with you anyway.

PLI is not requried but it is a good thing to have. You will not get a policy in your name if you are under 18 though. And if it is in your dads name he will need to be present at the disco for it to count.

Actually not true. Musicguard (who we use) and therefore I assume djguard as well offer PLI once you get to 16. (and then withdraw it again when you get to 85:confused: )

What I do with all my bookings is give them a ring a week before to double check everything and ask if they have any 'special' songs which they would like me to definetly play. Sometimes they say no but often give you a few tracks they like. This can help you govern what sort of music they like - have just received a list of 25 songs for a 19th I am doing next week.

Or you could do what I do...send them a music request form with the booking confirmation. My accompanying letter asks them to return it 14 days before their function if possible, to ensure we have most of their requests on the night.

Mine is two-sided with space for up to 50 songs (3 hours worth), so they can request as much or as little of the music as they like.

I also have a small section where they can list any songs or artists they DON'T want to hear.
