I've just got home from doing my 1,000th pub quiz night, and it was a really enjoyable night all round...not because it was busy (I had about 7 teams), but because of the atmosphere.
When I started, I announced it was my 1,000th quiz & everyone cheered & gave me a round of applause. I sometimes get that at the end of the night, but never before at the beginning!
The atmosphere was great all night...due to teams taking the mick out of each other & me, and me in turn taking the mick out of the quiz teams. When I read out the answers, the teams who got each question right would cheer out loud, which added to the atmosphere.
The result was also unexpected. A team sitting near me were a fair way down the leader board before the last round, and they said they were going to try & move up to third place. I told them I thought they'd end up higher than that.
The final round is called "The magnificent seven" and consists of 7 multiple choice call-out questions worth 3 points each, so the maximum score in this round is 21 points. The way it works is that after I take in their sheets, I announce over the mic how many answers each team have correct...but not which ones. They then have the option to take back their sheet & change some answers to try & improve on their score.
The team near me only had 3 out of 7 right on their first go, so they changed some answers and ended up with 6 correct answers, gaining them 18 points, which was enough to win the whole quiz by just 1 point...beating the team who had been winning all night into second place. They were over the moon!
I'm expecting to do at least another 1,000 pub quiz nights before I retire in the next few years, although I'll never catch up my friend, who has already done more than 5,000...but I really hope I get a lot more like tonight, as it was the best possible way to start the week.
:D :D :D
