Very quick question (before I press the Off button)

Hi all,

Quick question regarding the Cortex HD1000. I tested it earlier and loaded on 548 tracks. It took about 2 minutes to register them and all was fine. About 45 minutes ago I added 7800 tracks to it and it is currently reading as 548 but you can see it searching (indexing?).

Does it usually take a while to recognise that amount of tracks?
Will it always take this long or will it be quicker as the unit will recognise the tracks from the memory?

Quick reply please as I am tempted to shut the unit down.....:confused:

Hi Gary,

Are you indexing the database on the Cortex unit itself? I've never done this as I have heard that it takes a long time and isn't very efficient. The preferred way is to index everything using the database manager on your PC. This should only take a couple of minutes.

I plug my external hard drive into the PC, index and build the database using database manager and when plugging it back into the cortex, all the files are recognised. It harnesses the power of the PC and works much faster.

Also, I split all my MP3 files into alphabetical folders. I don't know what your file structure is - but several smaller folders are better than one huge one.

Hi Bridge, thanks for that information. I didn't even use the Cortex Database and yes, you are right...I just plugged in the HD to the unit and it is doing it's stuff (slowly!). All my stuff is one big file too.

Am I ok to shut the unit down and do it your way?

..and lastly (sorry)...Is it worth me creating folders alphabetically? (A, B, C..etc so all the .mp3's or Audioslave, Arctic Monkeys etc go in their own designated folders?).

I want to get this sorted asap so thanks for the info.

Hi Gary, stopping it won't be a problem - switch the cortex off before the hard drive so you don't get the error message. I would then plug the HD into the PC - delete the .db folder that will have been created (but not completed) by the cortex database builder.

Then when you run the database manager, it will recreate the database from scratch... and in a couple of minutes all being well.

I have put all my Abbas and Arctics in A - the Beatles in B etc. Windows XP handles the files quicker in smaller folders too.

See how you get on using your PC.

I was told by Cortex its much quicker using the PC but found that not to be the case.

I have about 8,000 tracks including duplicates and that would take about 30 minutes to load the whole lot using the Cortex machine.

Hi all,

I'm going to bed now as I have seriously had enough of this...aargghhhh...thing! I have loaded all of the tracks on to the system using the software on the pc. Quite easy (thanks for the info) BUT BUT BUT.... I am getting an error message every now and then saying words to the effect of "storage device removed unsafely, files may be corrupted." (something like that?)...and then it won't let me do anything!!!! I'm going absolutely ballistic here at the moment.

I am sure I have done everything that I have needed to and I powered down before removing the HD from the USB. What do I need to do before I waste my time taking the thing back as to be honest, I'm not filled with much confidence at the moment (I know it may be a stupid little easy thing but it's frustrating and I wouldn't trust myself with this for another 2 minutes let alone a whole night!!).

are you using cortex manager , when i had a cortex i used it and it never even took as long as 2 minutes for over 10000 tracks???

i used to ....

power up

attach powered hard drive and keyboard

switch both on

they would register in about 30 secs and away you go.

to power down simply turn the cortex off first.

I have just powered it up again. This time I also unplugged the USB keyboard too and once the unit was on, I plugged in keyboard and HD. Everything seemed to be fine. I did this 2 or 3 times with no problems so I don't understand what the problem was (or maybe..still is?).

I'm not around myself today as I am off to Oxford soon to see Gary Numan and then the weekend will kick off so the next time I will get to grips with the Cortex is on sunday. If you don't mind and I need some advice still then it's likely I'll contact you then (if that's ok). I do have some questions actually and I'll leave them until then.
