Looking for opinions on Skytec DJ PA 15s

Hi,

I've been reading through various previous posts on active speakers, and while I'd love a pair of Mackie 450s or ART 310/12a's, the budget isn't available :( (at the moment).

My question is - does anyone have any experience (bad OR even good :D ) of the Skytec DJ PA active 15s?

I'm aware they are considered at the lower end of the scale (brand snobbery aside), but would welcome any opinions. They would be for occasional use in a small venue for max 100 people. Currently using a pair of Hisys 2s with a 1.3K driving them - very heavy, vastly over powered :eek:, but sounds good :D :D

Stick with the Peaveys, Skytec drivers are pants and you will blow them in no time

Nothing wrong with Skytec drivers. I've got a pair of 15" Skytecs that have been going strong for over 2 years without a problem. Like most kit, if you look after it it will last, if you abuse it then it will fail :)

I haven't heard the Skytec actives but the plastic passives are okay. I expect you would find them lacking a bit compared to the Hisys.

If you can afford a few extra pounds I would go for the Warrior PSR 15A or my second choice would be the Soundlab G592D 15" Active Speakers.

Used skytecs passives for a couple of years with no problem. Just look after them as already said. Never blown a speaker in 21 years of DJ'ing so a lot of it is really looking after gear and matching it well to the amp used.

I have never really liked the sound from a poly cab so i would stick with the Peaveys personally. As for the brand skytec is a good budget manufacturer, nothing wrong with that.

And as for the weight well I'm pretty sure your peaveys will weigh somewhere around 20-25kgs each where as your skytecs weigh in at 20kg so I dont think its worth buying new gear to save that small amount. Although being active i suppose thats one less bit of kit to carry in (the amp)

If i were you I would try and hire some for your next gig and see what you think. Might be worth paying out £30 to hire rather than £??? just to find out they may not be suitable to your needs.

Same here==I did mange to blow a Skytec driver and a horn but that was due to overloading--so generally they arent too bad--but your going backwards if you ditch Peavey.

I hear Class D do some cheap gear thats sounds good.:D :D :D

Audio Intimidation do a 1k rig consisting of amp 2 x18 bins 2 x 10" mid top for £500. Heard it at the weekend not bad at all for the money.

I see there are some clearance deals on the Peavey Pro 12P. Only 200W RMS though.

Anyone any comments on these?

If I'm going to the upper end of the price scale, I'm currently inclined to go with the Warriors (heavy, but they seem to be well liked - mostly ;) )

i would steer clear of skytec, just my opinion but it's based on a few bad experiences with quality of said speakers.

stick with the Peavey Hisys 2s. Peavey are better than skytec. Plus i wouldnt go with the pr15 either because theyre not as good as the hisys.

if anything i would try and get hold of some hisys subwoofers to go with the hisys tops and another amp.

TBH bud, i wouldn't bother with the skytec's.
Ive had a pair of 15" passives for a while now, and have had to replace the bass driver, i changed the piezo's for compression drivers, and only last month the cabinets themselves started vibrating:rolleyes:

I replaced them with some Tapco (Mackie) 6912's, which for the money sound unreal.
Why not check out the 'Thump' powered speakers they do, as they seem excellent value for money, especially as they are engineered by Mackie.
If not them, try RCL?
