I am looking to make my set up time quicker and want to put a rackmount pc in a case - No problem there.

I really dont want to pay silly money for a rack mounted TFT monitor.

So I asked the good chaps at ebuyer if they had any ideas, they are normally quite helpfull.

The guy quickly sorted my rackmount case for my existing pc, then moved on to the monitor.

After rejecting many options due to price i asked this question, which i now put to you...



" can't i just get a 10U blanking plate, cut a rectangle in it and glue my old 15inch monitor to it"

Well I never heard so much laughter.. but to my mind surely it would work fine.

Nope fraid not. TFT screens use the rear of the panel for cooling. Hence why it is mostly vented plastic. All TFT's use a backlight to provide the illumination and they do generate a fair bit of heat. There are ones specially designed for what you want but they are not cheap.

Oh just had an additional thought. You could use a wall mount bracket to give some airflow between back plate and monitor. This may work.

Why not just stick some fans behind the monitor to keep it cool?

Because if it was attached to the 10u rack by glue there would be no airflow.

Think you've all missed Richards point, it sounds like he's describing cutting a hole and mounting the screen behind the panel, therefore the back of the monitor would remain exposed.
Absolutly no problem with that! Just make sure it's secure......

Because if it was attached to the 10u rack by glue there would be no airflow.
the fan would work regardless unless you block the back of the rack off too.
if so cut a few slots or drill a few holes in the said plate and put a couple of computer fans on the back plate to sook out the hot air.;)

Surely it depends on the design of the monitor. Mine has vents at the top and bottom, so if you got a 10U blanking plate and drilled 4 holes in the right place (much better solution that glue!) then theres no reason you couldn't attach the monitor and still have space at the top and bottom for airflow.

Exactly. and the proposed case has 10u on top which lifts up to desired height and then folds away when done.

So it would seem viable. Now where do i get a blank that big & how do i go about cutting the hole neatly etc

You know on the back of LCD tv's you can hang them up on the wall via an extended arm ect ect.

On the back of the LCD tv there are 4 holes. These holes are for the wall bracket to attach to the tv.

Wht not just just strengthen the 10U blank plate and screw the LCD screen to the black plate and rack mount it that way.

Most tv's these days have a vga input so you can plug a pc or laptop straight in to them.

problem solved - just bit the bullet and bought a rack mount 15" touch screen - just don't tell the mrs how much it cost (ok!)

Should have a pic of a new rack to show once i pick up the case from one of you... :)
