View Full Version : No First Dance Song.
I have just got the details for a weding disco this Saturday. How much more late can it get???
The booking was made a while ago but the club have not been taking my calls or replying to my emails but i got the infomation i needed in the end.
I rang up the grooms dad (as that was the number i was given) and from what i can take tie b&g dont have a wedding song.
So the way I see it is that i get to deciede the song for the first dance.
From what i can tell the b&g seem quite young so this is where im stuck for choosing a wedding song. I dont know if it is my place to pick one but i was thinking of writing up a short list of ideas they could pick from on the night as they don't have a clue on what to pick.
Any ideas??? :)

It's not your place to choose one, but if they need help, then ask then the styles and genres of music they like and then come back and tell us and we'll probably be able to suggest something.
Well I did ask what type of music the required and all they said was a bit of everything from 50's up to the new chart music.
They would like some background music from 6 till 7.30. Then the first dance (if they want one that is), have a boogie then buffet at 9pm and after buffet party like its 1999, sorry, till 12pm.

No, I meant what kind of music are they into on a personal level rather than what they think they should have for the reception, and I was talking about for the first song.
For example, they might be into rock and indie and might not want something too slushy, so something like Paul Weller - You do something to me, might be applicable. Or they might be into a bit of R&B innit, so you could suggest All my life - KCi and Jo Jo etc etc

Maybe not, but on more than one occasion I have been asked to do just that, sometimes five minutes before the event.
My two pennorth-
Wonderful life-Black
Baby can I hold you- Tracy Chapman ( some folk say Boyzone, I don't )
Wonderful tonight-EC
If any more come to mind I'll say.

How can you choose a first song without knowing their taste in music? You might play something they hate.

I think it sounds like they may be dreading the idea of the first dance altogether. Nerves etc.
I think you'll just have to have a good chat to them at the beginning and put their minds at rest.
Last time this happened to me they eventually came up with......
Agadoo.
They didn't want to be on their own so they got everybody to join in.

If they're into that kind of stuff, you could suggest No one by Alicia Keys, which seems to still be massive. Last month, It was the first dance at TWO consecutive weddings I did.

Just what I was thinking.
Even worse than that, what if one of them was getting married for the second time & you happened to choose the same song they had for their FIRST wedding?
That would hardly go down well!

Fairly unlikely though.

Yes, but I wouldn't want to take the chance.
If I was asked to select a first dance, I think I'd refuse...
...however, I WOULD be happy to give them a number of suggestions, one of which they might want to choose.

Totally agree with that, Rob.
If I was asked to suggest a song for the first dance I'd tell them the popular choices from other weddings I've done (and I've done lots!) such as Don't Wanna Miss A Thing (Aerosmith), From This Moment On (Shania Twain), Amazed (Lonestar), Everything I Do (Bryan Adams), Truly Madly Deeply (Savage Garden), just about anything (recent) by Westlife, etc.
Then again, I've had first dance requests for Meatloaf (Bat Out Of Hell) and Madness (One Step Beyond).
Each to their own, I say!
But I definitely wouldn't choose the song for them.
Anyway, if they're not forthcoming with first dance ideas maybe it's because they don't really want to do a first dance. They could be too shy or nervous or simply just rubbish dancers! It's their day and they can have it their way!
...however, I WOULD be happy to give them a number of suggestions, one of which they might want to choose.
Thats what I was thinking.
Was thinking of selecting popular first dance songs from all genres so if they havent thought of any then i can show them a list of song and if they like one of them then cool.
The thing i am dredding is if they do think of a song, they ask, I search and I dont have it. :(

I wouldn't worry Tom, you've gone to great trouble to get in touch and talk to them before the event, but it would seem their not really too bothered about getting all the details sorted, or they would have made sure they contacted you themselves, if only to let you know what the first dance would be.

That won't be your fault....so I wouldn't worry about it.
If they want to make SURE you have their first dance, they should tell you what it is in ADVANCE of the function!

The Conga!!!!!!!
Did one a couple of weeks ago where the first dance was after the buffet and the did the whole "everyone on the dancefloor make a circle round the bride & groom -as-if-we're-about-to-do-new-york-new-york" kinda thing...
... to the Time Warp
Followed by YMCA, Agadoo, Oops, Tiger Feet and Greased Lightning.
And amazingly, most people stuck around for the whole set :D

Why do you need to have a first dance?

No-one said they have to.
We all know that there's no romance and no slowies at your weddings Rich.

i will gladly play whatever the customer wants- fast slow or inbetween.
but if they havent bothered to choose a first dance which is generally a "special" song to the b&g i really cant see why you would ever pick one for them.
its like choosing the brides dress?

Back to the job in hand.......
Maybe they don't want a first dance:shrug:
You just treat it like a birthday or other party and the B&G will hit the dance floor when they're ready.

I remember at one of the weddings i done last year they chose the hokey cokey for the first dance. went down a storm and everyone stayed on the dancefloor after that. Great night.
