View Full Version : What would you buy?

Excalibur

This thread may be seen as mischievous, but it is an attempt to see what options exist. You need a PA of 1.5Kw output, and you have £1000 to spend, and it's not Class-D. What would you buy with the only provisos being the three stated above, and it must be something you would be confident of serving you reliably on the road.

I personally have only one in mind, so await your thoughts.

Active or passive? New or secondhand?

And Steve, you'd be very lucky to get a MA system for that amout of cash.

Sorry I should have said new, but foolishly assumed that would go without saying! Active or passive? Either or both, no probs.

No-one's listening Peter!

What else is new? :( :( :(

As I said specify the items used, it's fine saying what you'd use, but can you get it at the price I set?

How dare you call me a child? :p :p :D

I now see you asked active or passive Darren, but I said from the outset there were only three fixed points.
1) Not Class-D
2) COST £1000 NEW!! Where did the £ 1500 come from?
3) 1.5Kw of sound.

Anything which fits these is allowed, but please say which items you would use. Although you don't have to give a supplier link, it would show your costs to be feasible.

Since no-one has yet been able to do this, the only one I know of/ would use which gets in is Peavey Pro subs and Pro 15's with say a Peavey PV2600 amp. Please show me otherwise.

Is that really a 1500 watt system, have they uprated the speaker ratings maybe? My Speakers are 250 watts RMS each. 4 x 250= 1000

My speakers ( as above ) are driven by the Peavey XR800F with an ouput of 500rms per side into 4 ohms -I wouldnt want to drive with a larger amp.

From the Internet--
PV2600 amplifier, The Peavey PV-2600 power amplifier has a massive 900w RMS (1800w program) power per channel at 4 ohms.

Although I haven't heard the 15" W Audio, I have a pair of the little 8" ones and the clarity is very good, so I'll agree there. And the sub is supposed to be nearly the same as the RCF sub that I use, so I'll agree there too. :)

Would that be an Art 705 by any chance? Funny you should say that. My second DB Sub 15 is on order and I pick it up this week. On Friday night I was in a big room and needed the extra power so borrowed my mates Art 705 and ran them side by side. I had some time to kill before the guests arrived so I decided to crank the system up and drove it hard so I could compare the two. They both sounded pretty much the same, the only thing I noticed was that the DB Sub clipped just that little bit earlier then the Art 705. Oh yeah, and the Art 705 are heavier as well.

Pair Peavey Pro 15" Subs - £250
Pair W Audio PSR12 - £260
2 X Numark Dimension 3 - £200 each
Behringher CX2310 Crossover - £65

(Probably available cheaper but they are the first prices that came up on Google and are more than I paid)

A bit under the wattage at 1200w if you go by the speaker rating but the subs are 4 ohms and the Dimension 3 gives out 475w per channel at 4 Ohms so that makes it 1550w :)

This is my latest set up.

(Edit. The Peavey Bass bins I have are 300w each at 4 Ohms)

How about this.

When I went up to Studiospares in north london to buy my current pa speakers i asked to hear what the Auditorium speakers sonded like. He said that he only had 150 watts running through them and corr did they kick. The highs were really clear and the bass was so deep i could feel it in my chest. The speakers he was using a 12" speaker ratted at 600 watt rms.

Also that was with no eq at all. CD - amp - speaker.

Link (http://www.studiospares.com/pd_248400_STU%20Auditorium%20212b%20single.htm)

Two of these would be £495.84.

I have no idea what amp to put with those, but tbh as I dont know much about passive speaker setup's as I have always used active. 1200 watts of speakers which have a max spl of 125bd each for under £500.

Im toying with the idea about these. They may be 35 kilos each but i know i wouldn't need subs for most of my gigs so really this is a bonus. Just bring in the subs if really needed.

Another thing is they are a bit smaller overall from the 15" Active Fortissimo
