Starry sky effect - any suggestions?

Hi there...

I have some clients who have asked about creating a starry sky effect in a marquee (apart from the obvious method...;) ) - effectively a star cloth effect but hung pretty much horizontally not vertically, though I assume regular star cloth will be much too heavy, difficult to rig etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions for achieving this effect or indeed know if its possible to buy off the shelf?

Most companies I've seen do it do use starcloths, but I wouldn't get involved with rigging them unless you know what you're doing.

That was pretty much what I said to the client - the effect is easy enough to source, the rigging is the tricky bit - I've only ever seen these either as a pretty much permanent installation or using a false ceiling.

EDIT to add:- he did say the venue could provide this but at a steepish price - I have a feeling it would be worth it!

I agree. It does look fantastic and you certainly wouldn't want cloths falling on people's heads!

Just an idea but for the cheaper option...
i know you can get the home astronomy star projectors out of Argos or the like.
Doesn't anyone produce a more powerful one?

Yes, use a solar 250 projector with the star wheel. Very bright looks like needle size lasers everywhere. Looks great with smoke 2.

Maybe some of the 100 LED christmas lights, dirt cheap on ebay and easy to hook up, plus you'd get the twinkle effect

I actually made my own star cloth using similar lights. Got my missus to sew them all all into a velvet curtain, after sewing the lights in lined the back with another piece of curtain and job done for less than £25.00. Look much better and stronger than the ones selling for £99.00 with only 40 LEDs

You could contact the people who are supplying the marquee; they normally line the roof with fabric, maybe just maybe they might be able to rig a star cloth for you rather than the usual fabric.

And as Darren also said.. be very careful / don't get involved in rigging something like that if you do not have the experience and knowhow.
The companies that hire these out will, no doubt, have trained and experienced persons doing all the rigging.

I think my advice would be.. if you wanted to go ahead with this.. get a hire company in who would rig it for you - job done.

You also need to think about the praticalities of the venue you wish to do it in. I'm not sure if all marguees would be pratical for the instalation of something like this?!
