Hi, quick story ...

I went to a Leisure Centre near by as I have organized a party and didn’t to finalize. I’m DJ'n and we have a band etc but as I looked at the room one last nice I was amazed my there resident DJ. Tonight was a 50th and he had just finished setting up.

He had:

3 speakers
3 bass bins
4 Acme iM-5s Moving Head
2 i move's
2 kam start lasers
2 Acme ImpossiLED
2 Chauvet Vue 6 6-Channel DMX
2 Equinox Carina Laser
1 Equinox Pegasus Laser

This was MC Roadshows BASIC (small) package for 50-70 guests at a 50th!

And he only charged 165

I nearly charge that and haven’t got half his gear,

this today put me off doing the job,

if he is charging 165 for a whole night and setting up at 10.00 in the morn

WHAT SHOULD I CHARGE???


i was even considering hiring him, instead of me

but then decided against it

it's kinda knocked me down ..... but yeh

what do you guys think about it all

do you have this much stuff for a basic package for 165 quid??

You live and you learn! If hes getting the work in to justify the low cost then thats all that matters. Or thats the highest amount that he could charge? Or its a discount rate due to it being a residency etc. plenty of factors in this!

Don't get yourself eaten up just because this guy has alot of gear, It doesn't mean he is a good Dj, Have you seen him work?

What makes a good Dj is the music that they play not the equipment they use, It doesn't matter if you use Mackie or Kam speakers it is music that matters, Charge your price for your experience rather than your equipment, Yes i charge for the 3 different sized shows that i do due to the work involved but most of my work is standard discos.

Also what you have listed there it sounds like abit much equipment for a 50th birthday if you ask me.

I cant bear to think what his Large Roadshow is like,

on the info sheet it says "12 men required and 8.5 hours setup time" - 350 quid!!

And your right about the music, I havn't seen him in action but would love to..

Unfortunately some still think that big is best, if everything will fit then everything goes in and for the same price to boot, and you usually find that the DJ has a roadie so he doesn't have to cart the heavy gear.

TBH I dont have much to say about them, but I will say somthing.

Who is going to take 5 lasers to a 50th Birthday??? One maby yeah (like a star cluster for example) but still???

How does this guy make money,
He must be paying the guys below minimum wage, My medium roadshow goes out for the same money as that and there is one of me and i have 4m truss, 2 mac 250 krypton moving heads, 2 flames, 2 scx600 scanners, 2 efx500, 2 martin egos that is just lighting then i have all my audio ect and can be more gear if i am doing video work.

Lets face it how many weddings can you have the function room 8.5 hours in advance if they are having the day recepetion there too?

What is mad is that i did a kiddies birhtday and someone came up to me and introduced themselves as the mother and grandmother. How does that work??? But seriously, for most gigs I use a small rig, and I include marquees in that. It is how you DJ, not the gear you use. I can provide a huge PA etc if required, but only use it when doing a huge venue. You don't need to fill a room, only the dance floor

I have never seen the point of over-large mobile discos anyway. If I was a mobile nightclub maybe vast amounts of lights & lasers would be needed but most wedding & birthday venues are just swamped by too much light & sound.

Maybe she meant Grandmother of the child, Mother of the client?
