The pub is dead???

had a night off tonight. (warning am a little drunk):beer1: :beer1: :beer1: :beer1: :beer1: :beer1: anyway. The local was absolutely dead. They are charging 2.90 a pint and have to be going under. There was no one there on a saturday night. have seen this for a while now. 12 months ago I would have at least one gig a month there. All my bookings now are weddings, not a bad thing but what happened to the pub???

Don't worry!;) It is starting to get sooooo depressing though. Out here the pub is the focal point of everything and there's no one there anymore!

I do every Friday night at a pub near me. Always find that this time of month is quiet usually down to the fact that people are 2 weeks in to the month after being paid and are starting to tighten the purse strings. I find next week will get busier than it has been then last friday and first friday of the month are just sheer mayhem. Pub rammed for wall to wall the the cycle starts all over again.

Working mens clubs prices are almost as high as pubs! the W.M.C across the road from me is always empty now when i go in there.

Cannot remember the last time I've seen ''set the world too right crew''.....
The landlord sold up at the one i used to occupied a couple of times a week, then it changed hand's and he turn out to be a right git.....so don't use it anymore....drink at home now (sad i know :( ).....unless out with the lads once in a blue moon.....

Some pubs are now being converted into Chinese / Indian restaurant's.......not a good sign for one of Britains oldest tradition's......sad really......

It's £2.80 for a Guinness in our Friday residency.

2 things, 1, we're talking a London borough, not Cornwall & 2, there was a slight drop in trade whan the smoking ban came in, but it's still full most weekends.

Lots of pubs round here closing. We suffer even more than the rest of the country because of the proximity to the ports and people doing booze cruises. £3 per pint is not unusual round here.

One of the things that really gets me is the fact that when the government introduce higher taxes to curb binge drinking etc in town and cities it is actually the folk in the countryside that seem to suffer. For us out in the sticks the pub is far more than a place to get bladdered.

Quite agree. A village needs a church, pub and shop. Once you take away or close those institutions it loses its focus. Also many of us started out doing discos in pubs. I have asked SEDA to campaign on the closure of so many pubs (and potential venues for us).

they dont use taxes to curb binge drinking- they use them to raise money.

i'm sure your pub serves non-alcholic drinks if you object to the duty increases :rolleyes:

No but I think that planning legislation needs to be amended as round here there have been loads of pubs and hotels that have been shut and converted into flats or houses or in lots of cases pulled down and several houses built on the site - which makes a nice fat profit for the owner but leaves the residents with no local to meet/interact with and hence no community.

I also had a night off last night, and my choice was Dr Who and the talent show you mentioned, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Dr Who is so much better now that they've given it a decent budget. It certainly showed in last night's episode, which was filmed on a massive set in Rome. I thought the production quality & special effects were excellent.

I had my doubts about the talent show, but was really surprised. There was a contortionist, a guy who sent up Boyzone, a group of attractive females playing electronic violin-like instruments, a girl with an amazingly talented dog and a young lad with an angelic voice who sang Pia Jesu.

I thought all five were amazing. If that quality continues over the coming weeks, I won't be surprised if the pubs are empty!

well, i am a landlord, although we are in a hotel (see attached pic) it has a main public bar. in the last two month, the chancer i mean chancellor has placed 4p on a pint, the breweries have placed £5+ per keg, (due to increased fuel and energy costs - cheers Mr Darling), My own energy charges have rised at a much greater than expected level, the goverment have changed the licensing of pubs, a 3 year license that used to cost £176 will now cost me £1800 per YEAR!, On top of that my staff have to be trained to a certain standard in order to get the license, which is £200 per staff member - we have 5 behind the bar, then myself.

I myself started DJ'ing in pubs and clubs etc, but i can now understand it from the landlords point of view now that for me to hire in a DJ would now have to be a 3-4 month thing, unlike in years gone by where a pub would have a DJ every week, DJ's are like cabaret acts now and its unfortunate for the up and coming DJ who could really learn thier trade by working in pubs - pubs have alwasy been a great learning curve for the new DJ. - Anyway back on topic -
The punters then complained when we put the lager from £2.25, to £2.50, Guinness etc £2.35 to £2.60. We have only just started to slowly get them back in and I am having problems getting a Friday night busy, due to another Karaoke about 30 yards away.

So I then look to perhaps try and bring in another form of entertainment, we had a Hypnotist called Adam Knight in, was great and we got him to operate in the main bar so it was provided free of charge to the punter, but people were so glued to the act that profits were down by about 5% even though we had at least an extra 40-60 people in the main bar.

I have tried the DJ'ing and Karaoke myself but find that people are board of seeing me as i am also behind the bar during the week etc.
