My partner, Lisa, works as a veterinary nurse and was on call this weekend checking on in-patients.

In the clinic they have a digital scale suituable for dogs upto 150kgs so I thought this an ideal time to weigh my amp rack.

Would you believe it came to 69.2kgs! - No wonder i dread getting the thing out the van.

Be interesting to see what the rest of you lug about weight wise.

Anyway. I am going to change the 3 amps i currently have for new lightweight models and would like some input from you good people on what would be suitable.

I have ruled out QSC PLX or Powerlights for the moment at least because of the costs.

With the budget i have in mind (about £1500) I am most likely heading for Crown XTi series with a more friendly 8.2kgs per unit + more power than i have currently.

Anyone else use these or suggest another lightweight manufacturer?

Ps the reason for doing this is, I just bought a large case from Tom (thanks for evrything by the way & thanks for the coffee) and want to save on setup time by putting in as much as possible pre wired. But the case is quite heavy on its own and with these amps i doubt me & her could lift it.

I use 2x Yamaha P5000s(£374.99 each From Digital Village) = 24KG + 4U Roadready Case(£103.95 From DJKit) = 10.5KG Total = 34.5KG (£853.93) Half the weight of yours, & 3/4 if you add another amp & 2U to the case.

My amp is a Warrior SB1000 which is about 300 watts per channel at 8 ohms.

It's in a stucco case, and I just put it on my bathroom scales. It came in at 24kg.

Not too bad.

Why not look at the digital amplifiers? Although more expensive, they are much smaller & lighter. They also give out virtually no heat, and heat is the cause of the majority of faults with traditional amps.

I think the crown are digital or at least switch mode hence the drastic weight reduction, if i bought 3 of them they would weigh less than 1 i have currently

My current amp rack is about the same at 70kg, but has 13k worth of output, so not too bothered about the weight. The heavy bugger is the Infinite 8 which is 8kw and weighs 40kg.

I have 3 of the Void Kryo amps, which weigh in at 8kg. However these are probably gonna work out more expensive than the QSCs.

2 x VZ5Ks @ 35kg each
1 x Kryo @ 8kg
1 x DSP @ 4kg
1 x 32a 2U rackdistro @ 6kg (ish)
1 x 12U rack @ 25kg (ish)

The Crown XTI does use a switch mode power supply.
I recently treated my self to one and they are a cracking bit of kit, I never realised an amp could by that light.
I’ve got 650w per side at 8 ohms and with the case its about 10kg :eek:

Now I could be way behind the times, but I thought there was an issue with some of the Digital amps, where the lightweight power supply ran out of puff from time to time? :confused: In the foreseeable future, we know a place which will soon be doing some very big, very light amps at sensible prices.;) ;) ;)

Still very true at the budget end of the market Peter, however there are a number of highly efficient touring grade class D amplifiers (MC2, FFA, Kryo, Labgruppen FP series, etc) which can hold their own and some over a class B lump weighing in at 4 or 5 times the switch mode.

Have you thought about powered cabs.
The peavey pro15P's weight about the same as the unpowered versions. The unpowered ones peak at 1200 watts per cab, 600 watts program. I think the powered ones are about the same.

I have a rack with 4x Behringer ep2500's running my Sub & Bass, this comes in at about 70kg. My proccesing rack also has a t-Amp proline3000 in it and this one amp weighs 34kg on it's own!

I would love to get 1U lightweight amps but as has been stated you have to spend a bit to get good ones.

I think I'd rather spend on an 'Inf8 V2' and put up with the 40kg's, not bad for a 7.4kW Big Man Bass Amp.......just got to convince the wife It's a good idea, I think I'm getting there! :D

Wearing my Luddite badge proudly, I have to say that I'm always happy when an amp is heavy, as I believe it to signify a decent power supply inside. This may change when a certain company puts the new lightweight offerings on the market. ;) ;) :D

I can't say, cos I get into trouble. Penmare has apparently seen one, and Justin and I have handled the component parts, which are going to be/have been launched at some electronics show. If it works, the weight savings, and power output should be staggering. If I tell you they will not be expensive, can you tell what it is yet? :confused: ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :D :D :D

Very ;) Apparently involving some revolutionary technology, not necessarily digital, though I'm not sure. Will be produced "in-house" and very loud. Time will tell as to reliability.
